WOMEN'S LACROSSE
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For the fourth time in her career and first time this season, Amanda Davio has been named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in women's lacrosse.
"Amanda had a great game on Saturday," said head coach Blake Boehm. "She set the tone early and helped us maintain momentum throughout the game. She'll be the first to tell you that her teammates played a big role in creating the opportunities for her."
A junior from Okemos, Michigan, Davio tallied five goals on seven shots at Albion. Davio helped the Knights down MIAA-rival Albion 10-6. She also recorded four ground balls and caused one turnover on Saturday.
The Knights are now 1-0 in the MIAA and return to action on Tuesday at Saint Mary's.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Jessica Bouma picked up Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Player of the Week honors on Monday for matches through April 9. This is the first time in her career that Bouma has claimed the honor.
"Jessica has played some solid tennis for us," said Calvin head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "Not just this past week, but the whole season. I am very happy that she is being honored with the Player of the Week honor for the MIAA, showing the hard work she has put in.
A junior from Kalamazoo, Michigan, Bouma went 6-0 last week. She helped the Knights go 3-0 last week with victories over Spring Arbor, Alma, and Olivet. On Monday, she picked up her first career victory at No. 1 singles against Spring Arbor. Bouma picked up a pair of victories at No. 2 singles in the MIAA. She defeated Caroline Ross of Alma 6-1, 6-1, and downed BreAnne Rudlaff of Olivet, 6-2, 6-0. She finished the week with a trio of victories at No. 3 doubles.
Bouma and the Knights return to action on Wednesday at Albion.
SOFTBALL
Calvin 7, Cleary 6
Cleary 8, Calvin 3
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin softball team split with Cleary on Monday afternoon to move to 12-12 on the season. The Knights rallied to win game one 7-6 and fell in a storm-shortened second game 8-3.
"I'm happy with how hard we played today," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "We didn't give up and fought to the end. We were aggressive at the plate which was good to see. We still have work to do and some things to tighten up but it was good to get a win today."
The Knights struck first in game one with three runs in the third inning. Freshman Katie Mumby (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) started the scoring with a homerun over the leftfield fence. Junior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) doubled to left field to score sophomore Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian). Frank slid into home plate on a well-executed bunt from junior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian).
The Cougars would tie the game with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
As the rain began to fall heavily, Cleary added three more runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 6-3 lead. The Knights would not back down however, with the bases loaded, sophomore Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) singled up the middle to score sophomore Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) and freshman Maddie Ellinger (Troy, Mich./Athens). With two outs, sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) single through the right side of the infield to score Borden from second. Jessica Brasser shot the ball at the shortstop who had trouble fielding the ball and Kaley Frank crossed the plate to seal the victory for Calvin.
Anna Gernant and Jessica Brasser both finished with three hits.
Anna Gernant improved to 10-5 in the circle and finished with 12 strikeouts.
The Cougars jumped out to an early 6-0 lead heading into the bottom half of the second inning tin game two.
Freshman Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) got the Knights on the scoreboard in the bottom with a triple to left field that scored Anna Gernant. Groen scored off a fielder's choice and Maddie DeGroot singled in Kristen Newman.
Cleary added a run in the fifth and sixth inning to take an 8-3 lead.
As freshman Jordan VanEerden (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) sent a shot into the outfield in the bottom of the seventh inning, a lightning bolt flashed across the sky and the game was called final after six innings.
Senior Paige Groom (Potterville, Mich./Potterville) recorded two strikeouts in game two.
Calvin returns to MIAA play on Wednesday at Alma.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, Bethel, Ind. 1
Calvin improved to 12-4 with an 8-1 non-conference victory over Bethel College (Ind.) Monday afternoon. The match began outdoors on the Strikwerda Tennis Courts but moved inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center due to inclement weather that moved through Grand Rapids late Monday afternoon.
Calvin swept all three doubles points. Senior Taylor Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Matt VanWinkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph HS) won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, junior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Il./Lake Zurich HS) and freshman Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzman (Tarija, Bolivia./Felipe Palazon) won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles while senior Anthony Vroon (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian HS) and sophomore Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) won 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
VanWinkle was a 6-4, 6-3 winner at No. 2 singles while Afour cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Vroon claimed a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at No. 4 singles. Wolters won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Senior Jared Doezema (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 6 singles.
"We had a good performance," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "I thought we were much sharper than Saturday (5-4 win over Trine). We had to make the transition from outdoor to indoor which is never easy but we kept our focus and played well."
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Olivet at 4 p.m.
MEN'S GOLF
PORTAGE, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team took second in a nine-team field at the Steven Tyler Intercollegiate hosted by Kalamazoo College Monday afternoon at the Moors Golf Club.
Calvin tied for second with host Kalamazoo with a team score of 308. Hope took first with a score of 300.
Junior Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a big day for the Knights, earning medalist honors with a round of 71, finishing a stroke ahead of Kalamazoo's Phil Ritchie. Junior John Van Noord (Troy, Mich./Oakland Christian HS) tied for eighth with a round of 77 while sophomore Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tied for 15th with a 79.
Junior Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morningstar Academy) had an 81 and sophomore Mitchell Knoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) an 84.
Calvin is back in action next Tuesday when it hosts the Knight Invite at Pilgrim's Run Golf Club in Pierson.
