Baseball Splits Monday Twinbill at Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. - Calvin split a doubleheader at Trine Monday afternoon, winning game one 6-1 and dropping game two 7-5. With the Monday split, Calvin also concluded with a four-game series split against the Thunder as the two teams split a doubleheader at Calvin last Friday.
In game one, Calvin (6-8 overall, 2-2 MIAA) broke loose for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 6-1 lead.
Four Calvin batters were hit by a pitch in the pivotal seventh. Sophomore Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) drove in the game-winning run as he was hit by a pitch with the bases-loaded to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. Junior Kyle Houts (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) and sophomore Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) were also both hit by a pitch with the bases full while freshman Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS) and senior Mike Kempton (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) both drew walks with the bases full.
Keane drove in Calvin's first run, grounding into a fielder's choice in the first that drove home Kempton in the top of the first.
Trine (8-5 overall, 2-2 MIAA) tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second.
The two teams then traded scoreless frames until the seventh when the Knights plated five.
Freshman David Dahms (Darien, Il./Hinsdale South HS) picked up the win for Calvin in relief to run his season record to 2-0. Freshman Mike Kool (Sturgis, Mich./Centreville HS) went the first 4.2 innings while freshman Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) also chalked up a huge third out for the Knights in the bottom of the fifth.
Kempton and junior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) had two hits apiece for the Knights in the win.
In game two, Trine jumped ahead early with four runs in the bottom of the first. Calvin closed to within a run at 4-3, scoring two in the second and one in the top of the fourth. Trine answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth however including a two-run homer by Drew Palmer.
Calvin scored two runs in the top of the seventh, using run-scoring singles by freshman Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Ca./Mt. Carmel HS) and Houts and had the bases loaded with one out but the Knights were unable to bring another runner home.
Calvin outhit Trine 12-6 but the Knights committed seven errors. Kempton, Clark, Kuperus and junior Matt Kotva (Elkhart, Ind./Concord HS) had two hits apiece.
Keane took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. Sophomore Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS) and freshman Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) also saw time in relief.
Calvin will now prepare to host rival Hope Thursday at 2 p.m. The twinbill will open a four-game weekend series with the Flying Dutchmen.
