Calvin Basketball Seniors Set to Participate in Local All-Star Game;
Softball Sweeps Wheaton;
Women's Lacrosse Flies by Franklin

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Five Calvin College basketball players have been invited to participate in the ADDIX Basketball Champions All-Star Games on Wed., March 29 at Davenport.

The women's all-star game tips off at 6 p.m. The men's all-star game follows at 7:30 p.m.

Two Calvin women's basketball players will participate. Senior Anna Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) and senior Lauren Goldthorpe (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) were selected to the all-star teams. Goldthorpe will not compete due to injury.

On the men's side, senior Cam Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell), senior Nick Kronemeyer (Hamilton, Mich./Hamilton) and senior Michael Welch (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore) will participate on Wednesday.

Tickets are available at the door. They cost $10 for adults and $5 for children. Families pay a flat rate of $20. College students with ID get free admission.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin softball team picked up two regional victories over Wheaton on Tuesday afternoon. The Knights picked up a 6-1 victory over the Thunder in game one. Calvin mercy ruled Wheaton 8-0 in game two to improve to 11-5 on the season.

"It was great to get two wins on our home field against a tough region opponent," said Calvin head coach Becky Hilgert." I thought our defense was outstanding in both games playing error-free ball. Anna and Paige had great command on the mound and kept the Thunder hitters off balance. Our offense started the day quiet but made adjustments and in both games we had nice production throughout the order."

Wheaton struck first on Tuesday when Hannah Clark crossed home plate in the first inning.

Sophomore Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) tied the game in the third inning with a single up the middle of the infield that scored freshman Katie Mumby (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake).

In the fourth inning, sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) doubled to left field. She later scored on a double down the leftfield line from freshman Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East). Groen would score on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea).

Junior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) singled up the middle in the fifth inning to score Maddie DeGroot. Kayla Groen then singled to left field to score Kaley Frank.

Maddie DeGroot singled through the middle of the infield in the sixth inning to score Rachel Borden.

Anna Gernant dominated the Thunder in the circle, only allowing three hits. Gernant notched 12 strikeouts. She has recorded 10 or more strikeouts five times this season.

The Calvin defense shined on Tuesday finishing the double header with zero errors.

Senior Paige Groom had a season-best performance on Tuesday in game two. Groom did not allow a hit through the first three innings. The two hits allowed was a season-best and the second best in her career at Calvin.

The Knights started the scoring in the second inning. Katie Mumby tripled to right field to score Kristen Newman and Kayla Groen. Mumby would score off of the bat of Maddie DeGroot.

Anna Gernant sent the ball flying over the centerfield fence in the third inning. Kristen Newman then double to right field to score Kayla Groen. Neman scored on a single from Katie Mumby.

The Maroon and Gold added another run in the fourth inning when Anna Gernant singled to left field and scored Maddie DeGroot.

The game ended in the fifth inning when Maddie DeGroot singled to left field to score Kristen Newman and apply the run-rule.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when the Knights open the MIAA schedule at home against the No. 4 ranked Thunder of Trine.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 20, Franklin 1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team snapped its five-game losing streak with a victory over the Grizzlies of Franklin College on Tuesday afternoon in its first game of the season at Zuidema Field. Eight Knights contributed goals as Calvin defeated its visitors decisively by a score of 20-1.

Senior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) got the Knights off to an early lead with back-to-back unassisted goals in the first 2:18 of play. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) widened the lead to three goals, scoring off a feed by Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). Junior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) added a fourth goal before the Grizzlies called timeout less than five minutes in to break up the momentum. Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) earned the assist on Hall's goal.

With 19:50 left in the first half, Tilma fed Pepper once again for the Knights' fifth goal. After over 10 minutes of scoreless play, Cefaratti netted another goal to complete her hat trick.

Two minutes later, freshman Allyson Mesman (Jenison, Mich./Hudsonville) scored an unassisted goal. Junior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) followed, putting in a free position goal. Thirty-six second later, Cefaratti recorded her fourth goal, also off a free position attempt. Freshman Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) capped off Calvin's first-half scoring, capitalizing on a one-timer off a feed by Cefaratti.

Franklin's lone goal came late in the first half, when Cali Wetli scored on a man-up opportunity.

Calvin headed into halftime with a commanding 10-lead, including a 22-2 shots advantage.

The Knights came out strong after the break, quickly regaining their double-digit lead as Davio, freshman Jamie Van De Burg (Lowell, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), Verrett and Pepper scored in the first five minutes of the half.

With 23:14 remaining, Pepper assisted Davio for her third goal of the afternoon, bringing the score to 15-1. After a Franklin goalie change, the Knights struck again quickly as Hall assisted Cefaratti for her fifth goal.

As the midpoint of the second half passed, Davio posted her fourth goal of the afternoon and sophomore Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) followed, scoring off a pass from Cefaratti to give Calvin a 18-1 advantage.

Davio matched Cefaratti's five goals, scoring off a pass by Tilma. With 2:37 remaining, Pepper netted the final goal of the game, her fourth, scoring unassisted off her own rebound after her first shot attempt hit the post.

In the victory, Calvin held a 42-5 shots advantage. The Knights completed 8-9 clearing attempts, while the Grizzlies completed 9-18.

The Knights won 18-23 draw controls, including 11 draw control wins by Baas.

Calvin sophomore goalie Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) recorded three saves on the afternoon.

The Knights' next game will be on April 8 when it travels to Albion for its MIAA opener. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
