Men's Track and Field Team Second at Montevallo Falcon Classic - Women's Track and Field Team Fourth

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

MONTEVALLO, AL - The Calvin men's track and field team took second at the Montevallo Falcon Track and Field Classic this weekend, posting a two-day team score of 78 points. The meet was shortened due to severe weather that swept through Montevallo late Saturday afternoon.

Calvin piled up points in the distance events.

In the 5,000 meters, Calvin took five of the top seven spots. Junior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second (15:28.93), senior Nate VanHaitsma (Olympia, Wash./Olympia HS) third (15:37.80), freshman Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) fourth (15:41.85), sophomore Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) sixth (15:48.53) and senior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) seventh (15:48.57).

In the 10,000 meters, senior Robbie Hohlman (Napeville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) was fifth (34:06.73), senior Matt Plantinga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) sixth (34:15.81) and junior Nate Brookhouse (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) seventh (34:29.91).

Calvin took the top four spots in the 3,000 meter steeplechase led by senior Zach Nowicki (Comstock Park, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) who captured the win in a time of 9:34.58. Freshman Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) took a strong second in a time of 9:53.67 while freshman Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) was third (10:01.90) and junior Matt Boelens (Bolton, Mass/Nashoba Regional HS) fourth (10:01.96).

The Knights also produced points in the field events. Junior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) was fifth in the pole vault (13-11), sophomore Brendan Van Houten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) fifth in the hammer throw (146-11), and senior Erick Holder (Marian, Ind./Eastbrook HS) eighth in the javelin (155-7).

Calvin will now prepare to compete in a non-conference dual meet at Hope next Friday afternoon.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

MONTEVALLO, AL - The Calvin women's track and field team took fourth at the Montevallo Falcon Track and Field Classic this weekend, posting a two-day team score of 65 points. The meet was shortened due to severe weather that swept through Montevallo late Saturday afternoon.

Calvin claimed several of its points in the distance events. Sophomore Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) was second in the 5,000 meters (18:23.31) while freshman Sarah Ball (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) was eighth (20:03.12).

Calvin took four of the top five spots in the 10,000 meters with senior Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, Mn./St. Croix Preparatory HS) taking second (38:58.64), senior Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) taking fourth (39:34.44), freshman Kristen Lundberg (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian HS) taking fifth (41:11.31) and sophomore Catherine Croft (Grand Rapids, Mich./Coopersville HS) taking sixth (41:18.88).

In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, junior Marissa McGahan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) was second (12:02.48), freshman Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville South HS) third (12:30.95) and freshman Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) fifth (13:03.42).

Calvin also picked up several points in the field events. Sophomore Kayla Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was fourth (10-0) while sophomore Annalane Miller (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was fifth (10-0).

In the shot put, senior Bethany Love (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood HS) was fourth (43-2) and senior Michaela Meckes (Bay City, Mich./Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) was seventh (39-8). Love was also seventh in the hammer throw (133-1).

Calvin will now prepare to compete in a non-conference dual meet at Hope next Friday afternoon.
