Volleyball Team Featured on Grand Rapids FOX-17 TV Wednesday Night;
Swimming and Diving Teams Set to Launch 2016-17 Campaigns

VOLLEYBALL

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Calvin women's swimming and diving will launch its 2016-17 campaign Friday night at the MIAA Relays at the Holland Aquatic Center.

The 12-time defending MIAA champion Knights return 24 letterwinners including four individuals that were All-MIAA selections last winter. The Knights also return six individuals that qualified for the 2016 NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships. In addition, Calvin welcomes nine freshmen to its roster of 33.

Returning All-MIAA selections include juniors Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS) and Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) and sophomore Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS).

Van Harn is the two-time defending MIAA champion in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. She is also the Calvin record holder in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.43 set at the NCAA III Championships last March.

Senior Adrienne Wesselius (Sioux Center, Ia./Unity Christian, IA), Mattson, Van Harn, Senior, Bradley and sophomore Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Ca./Home Schooled) were all qualifiers for the NCAA III Championships last March. Calvin finished 16th as a team at the 2016 national meet.

Van Harn was an NCAA III All-American in the 100 freestyle, placing fifth at the national meet. Van Harn, Wesselius and Mattson were part of Calvin's All-America 200 freestyle relay team that finished seventh. Bradley picked up NCAA III Honorable Mention All-America honors with a 14th place finish on the three-meter diving board at the national meet.

The Knights will be captained by seniors Hillary Glover (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian HS), Anna Griffin (Wichita Falls, Texas/Ramstein HS) and Wesselius.

Calvin also has several returning athletes who received academic honors for the 2015-16 season. Bradley was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team. Wesselius, Bradley, Mattson, Van Harn, Sernio and Murphy were all named to the College Swim Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America list.

Calvin will open its season on October 21 at the MIAA Relays at the Holland Aquatic Center and will return home to host Division II Grand Valley State the following afternoon at Calvin's Venema Aquatic Center.

In addition to dual meets against MIAA opponents, Calvin will face Wheaton and Wayne State (Mich.) in non-conference dual meets. Calvin will host a November quadrangular with Ohio Northern, Albion and Carthage and will compete in a January triangular at the University of Chicago along with DePauw.

The MIAA Championships are scheduled for February 15-18 at the Holland Aquatic Center. Calvin has been selected to host the NCAA III Central Diving Regional February 24 and 25. The NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships will take place March 15-18 in Conroe, Texas.

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The three-time defending MIAA champion Knights return 16 letterwinners including six individuals that were All-MIAA selections last winter. The Knights also return seven individuals that qualified for the 2016 NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships. In addition, Calvin welcomes 14 freshmen to its roster of 30.

Returning All-MIAA selections include seniors Brett Stoughton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville HS) amd Eli Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS); juniors Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia HS) and Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi HS) and sophomores Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason HS) and Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant HS).
Fish is the defending MIAA champion in the 100 backstroke while Stoughton is the three-time defending MIAA champion in the 200 butterfly.

Stoughton, junior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS), Fish, Britton, junior diver Michael Moentmann (Solon, Oh./Solon HS) and Ben and Eli Holstege were all qualifiers for the NCAA III Championships last March. Calvin finished 15th as a team at the national meet.

The Knights will be captained by Ben Holstege, Brett Stoughton and senior diver Dirk Tanis (Holland, Mich./Holland Chrisitan HS) this year. Tanis was an All-MIAA diver in 2014 and competed at the NCAA III Regionals last year.

Calvin also has several returning athletes who received academic honors for the 2015-16 season. Stoughton was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America second team and landed a spot on the College Swim Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America list. Moentmann, Ben Holstege and Britton were also on the CSCAA Scholar All-America list while Tanis and Vincent were CSCAA Scholar All-America Honorable Mention recipients.
