OLIVET, Mich. - The 25th-ranked Calvin men's soccer team maintained a firm grip on first place in the MIAA standings with a 1-0 win at Olivet Wednesday afternoon.

Calvin (13-2- overall, 10-1-0 MIAA) remains eight points clear of Alma in the league standings with three regular season conference games left to play.

Calvin outshot Olivet (3-13-1 overall, 3-7-1 MIAA) by a 24-3 margin but put only one of its shots in the back of the net.

Calvin's lone goal came from junior Mitch Stark (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon HS) in the 14th minute of play as he slipped in a shot off a pass from sophomore Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS). The goal was the third of the year for Stark.

Calvin continued to press for a second goal but came up empty on several chances. Olivet meanwhile came up with a corner kick and a pair of shots at goal in the final two minutes of play but Calvin's defense was able to hold strong.

Junior goalkeeper Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) posted his ninth shutout victory of the year for the Knights.

"Anytime you go on the road and pick up three points, it's a good thing," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Having said that, I think we left some things on the table and could have created and converted a few more opportunities. We will have to play much better on Saturday when we host a very tough Alma team."

Calvin will host Alma on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
