ADRIAN, Mich. - Calvin used four unanswered goals to propel itself to a 4-2 come-from-behind conference victory at Adrian Tuesday night. With the win, Calvin claims a vital three points and is now tied with Alma for third place in the league standings.
Adrian jumped off to a quick start, scoring in the 17th minute as Kirsten Chambers scored off a pass from Caroline Fleming. In the 30th minute, Adrian (5-9-1 overall, 3-8-1 MIAA) doubled its lead when Chambers set up Mackenzie Wilcox for a goal.
Calvin (8-7-1 overall, 7-4-1 MIAA) grabbed a lifeline with 54 seconds left in the first half as senior Allie Corp (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) scored off an assist from sophomore Bekah Maguire (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS).
Trailing by one, Calvin pushed for the equalizer and found gold in the 68th minute on a corner kick by senior Kailey Jo (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). On the corner, Jo sent a ball into the box that junior Anica Pausma (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) was able to head into the back of the net. It marked the second straight game that Kailey Jo has served in a corner that led to a goal.
With 10:23 left in regulation, Calvin took the lead on a shot by sophomore Mackenna Nesky (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS). Nesky was able to take a shot from the top of the box that redirected off an Adrian defender and sailed over the keeper's head and into the back of the net.
With 7:34 remaining, Maquire put the capper on the Calvin comeback with an unassisted goal to close out the scoring.
"Tonight was another step in this team taking a step forward," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "This was our first important win on the road and it came after conceding the first two goals. We showed strong resilience to fight back and I thought our seniors, particularly Allie Corp and Kailey Jo came up with vital plays when we need them. We are gaining confidence but there is still much work to be done."
Calvin finished the game with a 12-7 shots at goal advantage. Sophomore Brianna Koehn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS) had five saves in nets for the Knights.
Calvin will travel to Saint Mary's on Saturday for a 5 p.m. conference match.
