Calvin Fall Sports Athletes Receive MIAA Player of the Week Honors
VOLLEYBALL
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Anna Kamp has claimed Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Volleyball Player of the Week honors on Monday for matches through Oct. 17. This is the second-straight week that she has earned the honor and the third time in her career.
"This is a great honor for Anna," said head coach Amber Warners. "Anna is not only playing very well, but she is also leading on the court and showing a lot of maturity and keeping things fun and loose at the same time."
Kamp, a sophomore from Orland Park, Illinois, helped No. 1 Calvin go 5-0 last week, with victories over Saint Mary's, Clarkson, No. 17 Elmhurst, Wheaton and Ohio Wesleyan. Kamp was named to the 2016 Midwest Invitational All-Tournament Team. She recorded two double-doubles last week against Clarkson and Wheaton. Kamp hit .326 on the week, including a season-high .500 against Wheaton.
Kamp and the Knights return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Adrian to resume MIAA play.
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin College senior Isky Van Doorne has been named the MIAA's Offensive Player of the Week in men's soccer. A native of Calgary, Alberta, Van Doorne (Western Canada HS) had a big week in leading Calvin to victories over Hope and Kalamazoo last week.
A midfielder, Van Doorne scored two goals in a 5-1 win over rival Hope Tuesday afternoon. On Saturday, he scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win at Kalamazoo. His winning goal came with just over nine minutes left in regulation.
Van Doorne has five goals and two assists on the year for a Calvin team that is currently 12-2-0 overall and 9-1-0 in the MIAA.
Ranked 25th nationally, the Knights travel to Olivet on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
Calvin College senior Zac Nowicki has once again been named the MIAA Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week.
A native of Comstock Park and a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School, Nowicki is receiving the honor for the fifth time this season.
At the power-packed Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational last Saturday, Nowicki took ninth individually with a time of 25:13.
His finish helped the 17th-ranked Calvin men's cross country team place third in the team standings behind second-ranked North Central and fourth-ranked UW-Eau Claire.
Calvin is currently preparing to compete at the MIAA Championships slated to take place on October 29 at the Whiffletree Golf Course.
