Men's Soccer Opens MIAA Schedule With Shutout Win Over Adrian;
Men's Golf Takes Fourth at MIAA Jamboree - Remains Fourth in MIAA Overall Standings;
Women's Volleyball Ranked Third in AVCA Division III Poll - To Host Adrian Wednesday Night

On Tuesday afternoon, the Calvin men's soccer team hosted the Bulldogs of Adrian College in the MIAA opener for both teams.
Ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA Division III Top 25 poll, the Knights entered into the contest with a 3-1-0 mark while the fifth-ranked Bulldogs held a 2-2-0 record.
Both teams saw scoring chances early, but were unable to capitalize until the 36th minute when Calvin freshman Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian HS) headed in a goal off a chip shot by sophomore Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, MI/Unity Christian HS).
Adams' goal gave the Knights an offensive spark as they went on to outshoot the visiting team 5-0 in the remainder of the first half. At halftime, shots were 15-1 in favor of Calvin.
In the 77th minute, senior Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville, MI/Unity Christian HS) found the back of the net to build on the Knights' lead. It was junior Mitch Stark (South Lyon, MI/South Lyon HS), the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week, who found Hooker to record his fifth assist of the season.
Calvin controlled the second half, only allowing the Bulldogs to put one shot on goal. The Knights outshot their visitors 26-2 in the MIAA matchup.
Calvin goalkeeper Nate VanRyn (Grandville, MI/Calvin Christian HS) recorded one save in the victory.
"It was good to open our conference schedule with a win," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Adrian is a much improved team and (head coach) Charlie Edwards has done a great job with that program. The schedule will not get any easier. We have a big challenge ahead of us Saturday night on the road. We will have be prepared and ready to go."
The Knights will travel to Holland on Saturday to take on MIAA rival Hope College. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

MEN'S GOLF
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team posted a fourth place team score of 298 at the second MIAA Jamboree of the year and remain in fourth place in the overall team standings.
Tuesday's MIAA Jamboree was hosted by Olivet at the Bedford Valley Country Club.
Calvin finished just three strokes behind Hope on Tuesday as the Flying Dutchmen took first at 295 while Kalamazoo was second at 296 and Trine third at 297.
With four league rounds left to play, Calvin sits nine strokes back of league-leading Hope but just three strokes behind third place Trine and four strokes back of second place Kalamazoo.
Junior John Van Noord (Troy. Mich./Oakland Christian HS) was Calvin's leading man on Tuesday, firing a round of 72 that was good for fourth place individually.
Junior Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tied for ninth place individually with rounds of 75 while freshman Josh Song (Diamond Bar, Ca./Diamond Bar HS) was close behind with a round of 76.
Junior Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morningstar Academy) had a round of 78 to complete Calvin's top five.
Todd Mieske of Trine claimed medalist honors on Tuesday with a round of 67.
Calvin is back in action this Friday and Saturday when it competes at the Irish Hills Invite at the Jackson Golf Club. Tee times on Friday are set to begin at noon with Saturday competition slated to start at noon.
VOLLEYBALL
The Calvin women's volleyball team continues to remain high in the AVCA Division III Top 25 rankings. For the second consecutive week, the Knights are ranked third in the AVCA Division III Top 25 poll.
Calvin heads into the week with an overall record of 6-0. The Knights are scheduled to return to play on Wednesday, hosting Adrian at 6:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena in a key MIAA match.
On Friday, Calvin travels to the rugged Wittenberg Fall Classic. On Friday, Calvin will face Heidelberg at 6 p.m.
On Saturday, Calvin will face fifth-ranked Juniata at 11 a.m. and then turn around to face eight-ranked Wittenberg on its home floor at 5 p.m.
Defending national champion Cal Lutheran remains the top-ranked team in the AVCA Division III Top 25 poll. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is ranked third.
