WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 4, Albion 0
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- On Monday afternoon, the Calvin women's soccer team hosted the Albion College Britons in its home opener. The Knights entered the conference matchup, their fourth game in six days, with a 2-2-0 overall record and a 1-0-0 conference mark, while the Brits were 2-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in MIAA play.
The Knights were coming off a 3-0 Saturday loss to second-ranked Washington University, while Albion fell at Alma on Saturday 1-0.
Despite its busy schedule the previous weekend, it was Calvin who came out on top, handing the Brits their second loss of the season by a score of 4-0.
Both teams had scoring chances early, but it was the home team who got on the board first when senior Allie Corp (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) put in a rebound off a corner kick play in the eighth minute.
Neither team would score for the remainder of the first half. Following the break, the Knights came out strong, looking to extend their lead. Two consecutive Calvin goals scored within the same minute put the home team up 3-0 early in the second half.
In the 49th minute, sophomore Mackenna Nesky (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) fed senior Carly Veenstra (North Halden, N.J./Eastern Christian HS) who chipped in her second goal of the season. Mackenna Nesky widened the gap, earning another point for the Knights off an assist by sophomore Emily Van Vliet (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS).
The Knights continued to dominate the remainder of the second half, holding the Brits scoreless. With 17 seconds left to play, sophomore Annika Zandee (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) added one last goal for the Knights, heading one in off a free kick by senior Kailey Jo (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Calvin outshot Albion 18-9 in the 4-0 win. Sophomore goalkeeper Brianna Koehn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern H.S.) recorded five saves in the shutout.
"Coming out of a difficult weekend where we were fighting fatigue, I thought it was critical that we scored the first goal today," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "I thought our second goal was even more critical because it really kept the momentum on our side. When you have tired legs, sometimes you have to find different ways to put the ball in the back of the net. We were able to do that today and get a very positive result."
The Knights are back in action on Thursday night at Kalamazoo, and then will host Adrian on Saturday afternoon.
MEN'S SOCCER
For the second time in his Calvin College career, junior Mitch Stark has been named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in men's soccer.
A native of South Lyon and a graduate of South Lyon High School, Stark helped spark Calvin to a pair of victories at the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament last weekend. A midfielder, Stark assisted on the only goal in Calvin's 1-0 victory over Benedictine University Friday afternoon.
On Saturday, he assisted on three of Calvin's five goals in a 5-1 win over Aurora University.
By sweeping its weekend slate, Calvin captured the championship of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament as the Knights were the only team in the tournament to post a pair of victories.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Adrian at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field in the MIAA opener for both teams.
