MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 5, Aurora University 1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's soccer team claimed the title of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament on Saturday, defeating Aurora University 5-1.

After falling behind 1-0 in the opening moments of the game, Calvin (3-1-0) came back to level the score 1-1 on a goal by freshman Ian Adams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) with just over two minutes left in the first half. The goal by Adams was set up by a well-placed chip by sophomore Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS).

The goal proved to be an energizer for the Knights according to head coach Ryan Souders. "That goal was huge," said Souders. "Goals change games. That goal was encouraging and it allowed us to play more freely in the second half."

The Knights then exploded for four second half goals with junior Mitch Stark (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon HS) assisting on three of the four.

Sophomore Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) put the Knights ahead 2-1 on a goal in the 51st minute. Calvin then padded its lead on goals by sophomore Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Ia./Hempstead HS), Adams and senior Isky VanDoorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS). Witte and junior Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth HS) also were credited with assists on the afternoon.

Calvin finished with a 31-6 shots at goal advantage. Junior Nate VanRyn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) and sophomore Luke Schepers (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) combined in goal for the Knights to post the win.

"I was really proud of the way we played in the second half," said Souders. "Our guys came out committed to the way we wanted to play, moved the ball around and finally got on the end of some chances and put the ball in the back of the net."

In Saturday's other second round tournament game, Hope defeated Aurora 2-1 in overtime. Calvin was the only team to finish the tournament with a 2-0-0 record. Aurora and Hope finished 1-1-0 while Benedictine finished 0-2-0.

The Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament title is Calvin's first outright crown since 2009 and its sixth overall. The tournament began in 2001 and is dedicated to Calvin alumnus Dr. Calvin Bergsma who died tragically in a car accident during the summer of 2001. A 1967 graduate of Calvin College, Dr. Bergsma was a West Michigan urologist who was known as a kind-hearted man who cared deeply for everyone. Dr. Bergsma was particularly close to his friends at both Calvin College and Hope College. He had family ties to both institutions as his wife Gwen (1968) and son Corwyn (1996) are Calvin graduates while his son Clayton is a graduate (2000) of Hope College. Clayton was a four-year member of the Hope men's soccer team while Corwyn was a four-year member of the Calvin men's basketball program. Dr. Bergsma was a man who also loved athletics and this tournament - now in its 16th year of existence - gives honor to his name and family.

Calvin will now prepare to open its MIAA schedule on Tuesday when it hosts Adrian at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field.

VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Saint Mary's 0

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- On Saturday afternoon, the Calvin College women's volleyball team maintained its perfect record with a 3-0 home victory over the Belles of St. Mary's College. The Knights defeated St. Mary's 25-14, 25-15, 25-17 to improve to 6-0 on the season and 3-0 in the MIAA. The Belles fall to 1-6 overall with a 0-2 conference mark.
"I felt that we played pretty consistent today," said Calvin head coach Amber Warners. "We controlled the tempo today and I thought our defense played very well."
In the first set, the Knights took an early 10-3 lead, fueled by three aces from junior defensive specialist Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron). The Belles called a timeout to halt the Knights' momentum and responded with a five-point run following the break to make the score 10-8. Saint Mary's reduced Calvin's lead to one point (11-10), but the Knights pulled away once again, scoring six consecutive points, bringing the score to 17-10. Calvin scored its final two points off kills by senior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard) and freshman Ally Fea (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) to claim a 25-14 victory.
The Knights and Belles exchanged points early in the second set until the home team began to pull away, scoring four straight points to earn an 8-4 advantage. Calvin continued to build on its lead, outscoring St. Mary's 10-5 in the middle of the set, the scoreboard reading 18-9. In spite of a late offensive push by the Belles, they Knights put down the final four points of the set to take a 25-15 win.
Despite being down two sets to none, the Belles put up a fight in the third set. However, they were unable to answer the Knights' offense. With the score knotted at 10, Danhoff and junior Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ontario/Toronto District Christian) put the Knights ahead with a big block on Saint Mary's Meaghan Gibbons. Van Laare followed with two consecutive kills, and, after a timeout by the Belles, a kill by Danhoff brought the score to 14-10 in the Calvin's favor. The Knights outscored their visitors 11-7 to roll to a 25-17 victory.
Laura Danhoff led the Knights with 14 kills and assisted on five blocks while Tessa Van Laare and sophomore Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) recorded six apiece. Ally Fea had a career-high four kills. Junior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian) dished out 30 assists in the victory.
