CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 9, 2016

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Fontbonne 0

ST. LOUIS, MO. - The Calvin women's soccer team overcame two lengthy weather delays to claim a 1-0 victory over Fontbonne University late Friday night on the campus of Washington University of St. Louis.

The start of Friday's game was delayed 30 minutes by lightning and late in the first half another thunderstorm hit the area and forced another lengthy delay.

Undaunted, Calvin struck with a lightning bolt of its own as senior Carly Veenstra (Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) cracked in a 30-yard strike into the left hand side of the Fontbonne goal in the 56th minute.

Veenstra had six shots at goal during the game including three shots on frame.

Fontbonne pushed late but Calvin goalkeeper Anica Pausma (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) was up to the task in posting her first clean sheet in goal.

Calvin finished with a 14-7 shots at goal advantage. The Knights are now 2-1-0 on the year and are in the midst of a four-game stretch in a six-day window of time.

The Knights will face Washington University of St. Louis Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 1, Benedictine 0

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's soccer team got back on the winning track with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Benedictine Eagles Friday afternoon at Calvin's Zuidema Field. The game was part of a first round matchup of the Calvin Bergsma Memorial Tournament.

Ranked fourth nationally, Calvin (2-1-0 overall) began to break down the Benedictine defense as the game progressed. The Knights fired five shots at the Benedictine goal in the first half and broke through for the go-ahead score just 2:05 into the second half.

Sophomore Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) teamed up with junior Mitch Stark (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon HS) for the goal. Stark ignited the play with a rush through the left wing and lofted a perfect cross to McCaw on the far post. McCaw went up high for the cross and headed the ball just inside the oposite post to put the Knights up 1-0.

Calvin continued to pepper the Benedictine goal in the second half, forcing the Eagles to come up with eight saves including five in the second half.

Benedictine pressed inside the final 10 minutes for the equalizer but could not put a shot past Calvin junior goalkeeper Nate VanRyn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) who came up with a pair of key saves when called upon.

Calvin finished the game with a 19-3 shots at goal advantage.

"It feels good to be home and it feels good to get a win," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "We had great fan support today. That was huge and much appreciated. Benedictine is a team that is up-and-coming so we knew we would get a great game from them. I thought our guys were ready for the challenge though and put together some quality scoring chances. It would have been nice to put a few more in the back of the net but the goal we scored was a great one and I liked how we pressed the attack."
Calvin will now prepare to host Aurora University on Saturday at 4 p.m. on the second day of the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament. Hope is hosting Aurora Friday night and will host Benedictine Saturday night. The tournament champion is determined by overall won-loss record and in the case of a tie, goal differential is used to determine the champion.
