Men's Golf Players Receive Ping Great Lakes All-Region Honors;
Calvin Women's Lacrosse Players Receive MIAA Player of Week Accolades
MEN'S GOLF
Calvin sophomores Ben VanScoyk and John Van Noord have been named to the Ping Division III Great Lakes All-Region men's golf team.
A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, VanScoyk averaged 73.25 strokes-per-round this year for the Knights. He fired three under par rounds during the 2015-16 season including a 5-under round of 67 at the Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Tournament on September 5.
VanScoyk was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Golfer this fall and landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the second straight year. He took first place in the final MIAA fall individual standings, averaging 73.3 strokes-per-round in fall league competition. He is receiving Ping Division III Great Lakes All-Region accolades for the second consecutive season.
A native of Troy and a graduate of Oakland Christian High School, Van Noord averaged 74.63 strokes-per-round during the 2015-16 season. Van Noord was a member of the All-MIAA first team this fall and finished second in the final MIAA fall individual standings, averaging 74.6 strokes-per-round in fall league competition.
During the year, Van Noord fired three under par rounds including a 4-under round of 68 at the Olivet Lou Collins Memorial Tournament on September 4.
Van Noord is receiving Ping Division III Great Lakes All-Region honors for the first time.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Two members of the Calvin women's lacrosse team have receive MIAA Player of the Week honors. Freshman attacker Kelly Pepper has been named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week while freshman goalie Ellis Chalfant has been named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week.
Pepper (Wyckoff, NJ/Indian Hills HS) scored seven goals and assisted on another in MIAA Tournament play last week. In a semifinal win over Hope, she scored a career-high five goals. On the week, she scored 7 goals on 14 shots and was 3-for-6 on free-position shot attempts. She also won two draws and was credited with one ground ball.
Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Country Day School) was stellar for Calvin in MIAA Tournament play, posting a goals-against-average of 8.50 while making 27 saves. In the championship win over Albion on Saturday, she came up with 12 saves including a pair of key stops in the closing minutes on Albion free position attempts allowing Calvin to maintain a one-goal lead. Chalfant had a saves percentage of .614 on the week. Chalfant is receiving the honor for the second consecutive week.
Calvin captured the MIAA Tournament title on Saturday defeating Albion 12-11 in the title game. The Knights have advanced to their first NCAA III Tournament competition and will travel to St. John Fisher University (NY) for a game on Saturday afternoon.
