Volleyball Splits on Day One of Emory National Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. - The sixth-ranked Bears proved to be too much for No. 2 Calvin to handle on Saturday afternoon, topping the Knights 3-0. The loss marks the first time that the Knights were swept since Nov. 22, 2014 vs. Hope in the national semifinals match. Calvin is now 8-2 on the year, with Washington University improving to 12-0.
The first set saw a battle with both teams exchanging blows. Tied at 18, Caroline DuPont of Washington University got the kill and gave the Bears the lead that they would not release for the rest of the first set, taking the first set, 25-22.
The Knights came up just short again in set two. Trailing 19-24, junior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard HS) helped serve Calvin back into the match to tie the set at 24. The Knights and Bears would exchange points until Caroline DuPont of Washington University sealed the set for the Bears with a kill with an assist from Allison Zastrow.
Calvin jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in set three. But the Bears continued to claw back to tie the set at 24. The Bears would go on to take the third set, 27-25.
Senior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian HS) led the team in kills in the match with 13, Laura Danhoff finished with 11 kills, 2.5 blocks and two aces. Sophomore Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian HS) tallied 34 assists and freshman Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) finished the match with 11 digs.
The Knights return to action on Saturday as they face the host No. 1 Emory Eagles at 12 p.m. and wrap up the Emory National Invitational with a 4 p.m. meeting with No. 9 Cal Lutheran.
CALVIN/FRANKLIN & MARSHALL ROUNDUP
ATLANTA, Ga. - No. 2 Calvin volleyball improved to 8-1 on the year with a win over Franklin & Marshall in the opening match of the Emory National Invitational. The Knights defeated the Diplomats, 25-16, 25-16, 25-18.
The first set saw Calvin take an early 4-0 lead and the Knights never looked back. Junior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/ Willard HS) and freshman Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian HS) both tallied four kills in the first set.
In the second set, the Knights and Diplomats found themselves in a tight battle. Sophomore Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian HS) gave the Knights some separation with four-straight aces, giving Calvin an 18-10 lead.
With the Knights leading 6-5 in the third set, Calvin went onto a 12-6 run to put away Franklin & Marshall.
Senior Maggie Kamp led the Knights with 10 kills in the match, Laura Danhoff and senior Rachel Lubben (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) both had seven kills. Jenna Lodewyk finished with 28 assists and four aces. Freshman Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) tallied 12 digs for Calvin.
The Knights return back to action at 4 p.m. as they face No. 6 Washington (Mo.) for the second match of the day for Calvin at the Emory National Invitational.
