CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 17, 2015
Women's Soccer Win Streak At Five After 3-2 Victory Over Kalamazoo
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Kalamazoo 2
Playing its third game in less than a week, the Calvin women's soccer team secured a 3-2 conference victory over visiting Kalamazoo College Thursday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
With the win, Calvin improves to 5-2-0 overall and to 3-0-0 in the MIAA.
All of the scoring took place in the first half with Calvin striking for the first two goals. Junior Carly Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) put Calvin on the board just 4:29 into the match, beating two defenders and sliding a shot just inside the far post for her fifth goal goal of the year.
In the 22nd minute, senior Taylor TenHarmsel (Holland/Holland Christian HS) received a pass in the box from senior Jaimie Verbal (Dexter/Dexter HS) and headed the pass into the back of the net to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage.
Kalamazoo (2-5-0 overall, 2-2-0 MIAA) cut the deficit in half moments later on quick counterattack that led to a goal by Madison Moote.
Just over a minute later, Hiegel (Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) rifled in a shot from 20 yards out after receiving a lead pass from junior Brianna Russell (Plainwell/Delton-Kellogg HS).
Kalamazoo countered with a goal in the 42nd minute on a Calvin defensive miscue that led to a 3-2 halftime score.
In the second half, Calvin controlled most of the possession and outshot Kalamazoo 6-4 over the final 45 minutes but neither team scored again.
"We were not necessarily as sharp as we would have liked with our all-around performance," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "I think some of that had to do with the fact that it was our third game in a short span of time. It's a pretty demanding stretch of games for our athletes right now and at times today, we weren't quite as sharp as we would like. Having said that, it was important to come out with the win which we will take and try to up our performance on Saturday."
Calvin finished the game with a 14-6 shots at goal advantage. Senior Holly Ellerbroek (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had two saves for the Knights in recording the victory in goal.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Adrian for a match scheduled to begin at noon.
