VOLLEYBALL
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Faced with a determined opponent playing on its home court, Calvin dug down and fought its way to a 25-13, 26-24, 25-10 victory at Saint Mary's College Wednesday evening in the MIAA opener for both schools.
Ranked second nationally, Calvin (4-1 overall, 1-0 MIAA) rolled to an easy set one win as the Belles committed nine attack errors.
Saint Mary's (4-2 overall, 0-1 MIAA) stiffened in set two however, building a 20-16 lead. The Belles then took a 24-20 lead but the Knights responded with six unanswered points kicked off by a kill from sophomore Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian HS) and capped by back-to-back service aces from senior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS).
With momentum back on its side, Calvin rolled in set three, hitting at a .667 clip to seal the win.
"We knew coming in here would not be easy," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "Saint Mary's is a much improved team and we knew they would be very good and would put up a good fight. I was really happy with how we pulled through after going down 24-20 in the second set. That was a huge confidence builder for our team and is the biggest takeaway for us from this match."
Calvin was led by Maggie Kamp who tallied 10 kills and six digs while Van Laare had had eight kills. Junior Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) was strong up front with a block solo and three block assists to go with six kills. Freshman Anna Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had six kills, six digs and two block assists.
