CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 11, 2015
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Kalamazoo 0
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - No. 2 Calvin volleyball improved to 5-1 on the year with a 25-5, 25-12, 25-17 victory over Kalamazoo College on Friday evening at Van Noord Arena. The Knights improved to 2-0 on the season in MIAA play and Kalamazoo falls to 1-5 and 0-2 in conference play.
"I am very happy with how we came out tonight," said head coach Amber Warners. "I thought we controlled tempo right off the bat and that was something that we talked about needing to do. I was very happy with how aggressive and consistent our serves were and I think that really helped to take them out of their offense and allowed us to control the tempo."
The Knights were led by junior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard HS) who had seven aces, which ties her career record at Calvin, tying her performance vs. Adrian on September 25, 2013. Danhoff also hit a perfect game with 10 kills off of 10 total attacks.
Calvin took control of the match early, taking an 11-0 lead in the first set. The Knights never looked back taking the first set 25-5. The Hornets were able to apply more pressure in the second and third sets, evening cutting Calvin's lead to 17-14 in the third set, but the Knights were too much. Calvin would go on to take the second and third sets, 25-12 and 25-17.
Senior Rachel Lubben (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) led the Knights in kills on Friday with 13. Senior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./ Chicago Christian HS) finished the night with 12 kills. Freshman Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) tallied 11 digs on the night. Calvin had a season-high number of aces at 13 and hitting percentage at .507.
The Knights return to action on Saturday as they host the rival Flying Dutch of Hope College, who come into the match ranked No. 9 in Division III at 4-1 on the year and 2-0 in MIAA action. The match will begin at 7 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.
