Men's Soccer Extends Win Streak;
Giantsopoulos Named MIAA Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week;
Van Noord Named MIAA Men's Golfer of the Week;
Volleyball Team Ranked #2 in AVCA Division III Top 25 Poll

MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 14, Great Lakes Christian College 0

The Calvin men's soccer team extended its win streak to two games with a 14-0 win over visiting Great Lakes Christian College Tuesday afternoon at Zuidema Field.

The Knights (2-0-1) overall scored eight goals in the first half and six more in the second to complete the win.

Sophomore Micah Beard (Otsego, Mich./Otsego HS) and freshman Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, IA/Hempstead HS) had three goals apiece while freshmen Tyler Vlasak (Woodbridge, IL/Timothy Christian HS) and Lucas Albrecht (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS) had two goals apiece.

Senior Nick Groenewold (Oak Brook, IL/Timothy Christian HS), junior Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) and freshman Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) all had one goal apiece. Calvin also benefitted from an "own" goal put in by the Great Lakes Christian defense.

Senior Niko Giantsopoulos (Markham, Ont./St. Augustine Catholic HS) and sophomore Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) split time in nets to post the shutout in goal.

Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to Aurora University for a game scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. (EDT).

MORE MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin College senior Niko Giantsopoulos has been named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in men's soccer.

Giantsopoulos (Markham, Ont./St. Augustine Catholic HS) put together back-to-back shutouts for the Calvin men's soccer team this past weekend at the North Shore Invitational in Massachusetts. On Friday, Giantsopoulos had one save in posting a clean sheet in a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Endicott College. He then came up with two saves in a 1-0 win over Gordon College Saturday night including a key save in the closing seconds. For his efforts, Giantsopoulos was named to the North Shore Invitational all-tournament team.

MEN'S GOLF

Calvin College sophomore John Van Noord has been named the MIAA Men's Golfer of the Week.

Van Noord had a standout performance at the Olivet College Lou Collins Memorial Tournament this past weekend at the Battle Creek Country Club. At the tournament, Van Noord claimed medalist honors with a 36-hole total of 138 strokes. Van Noord (Troy, Mich./Oakland Christian HS) finished the tournament six-under par and helped lead the Calvin men's golf team to a first place performance at the tournament as the Knights finished nine strokes ahead of Trine University.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it competes at the first of eight MIAA Tournaments. Wednesday's tournament will be hosted by Albion at the Medalist Golf Club in Marshall, Michigan.

VOLLEYBALL

The Calvin women's volleyball team is ranked second in this week's AVCA Division III Top 25 poll. The Knights dropped one spot from their preseason ranking when they gained the top spot.

Emory University flipped spots with Calvin in this week's poll. The Eagles are the new No. 1 team after defeating Calvin in four sets last Friday night in Van Noord Arena in a meeting of the top two ranked teams in the country. Calvin and Emory are set to meet again on September 19 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Calvin opens conference play tomorrow night when it travels to Saint Mary's for a 7 p.m. match. Calvin will then host Kalamazoo on Friday at 7 p.m. and will then host ninth-ranked Hope Saturday at 7 p.m.
