WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, DePauw 0

BLOOMINGTON, IL - The Calvin women's soccer team picked up its first victory of the young season with an impressive 3-0 victory over the DePauw Tigers at the Illinois Wesleyan Titan Classic.

Calvin (1-2-0) upped the offensive tempo throughout the match, outshooting the Tigers 19-11. Calvin broke through for first goal of the game in the 27th minute as senior Sidney Kinney (Ada/Grand Rapids Christian HS) whipped in a feed from junior Carly Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS).

Veenstra then scored a goal of her own, popping in a shot in the 67th minute with senior Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play.

Senior Taylor TenHarmsel (Holland/Holland Christian HS) closed out the scoring, converting a penalty kick in the 77th minute of play.

Senior Holly Ellerbroek (Holland/Holland Christian HS) had five saves in collecting her first shutout of her Calvin College career.

Calvin's victory came on the heels of back-to-back losses to nationally-ranked Wheaton and Illinois Wesleyan earlier this week.

"This was our best 90 minutes of soccer this year," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "After the Wheaton (4-1 loss) game Tuesday, we stressed fundamentals on defense in our lead-up to our game last night with Illinois Wesleyan. I thought our defense really performed well in a tough 1-0 loss. The next piece of the puzzle was to start getting on the same page offensively and our players really executed well tonight. This was a big confidence booster for our team going forward."

Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts Trine University in its MIAA opener at 4 p.m. at Zuidema Field.

MEN'S SOCCER

WENHAM, Mass. - The Calvin men's soccer team picked up its first victory of the year with a 1-0 win at Gordon College Saturday night. The match featured a pair of teams that reached the 2014 NCAA III Tournament.

Calvin held control for large portions of the match and took a 1-0 lead on a shot by sophomore Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth/Frankenmuth HS) in the 30th minute of play.

Calvin continued to pressure in the second half and nearly scored again when a deflected pass bounced over the Gordon goalkeeper's head with Calvin senior Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Gordon goalkeeper Josh Spoonhour was able to beat Pruis to the ball with a backwards slide, corralling the ball inches before it went over the goal line.

Gordon (2-1-0) then mounted a last-ditch effort in the final 10 minutes to equalize but Calvin goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos (Markham, Ont./St. Augustine Catholic) was stellar down the stretch. With under 20 seconds remaining, Giantsopoulos snared a shot in the box by Gordon's Jerry Williams and then sent the ball deep into the Gordon end to close out the match.

"It was a hard-fought win and it is a win that we will gladly take," said a happy Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders after the game. "After an overtime game last night against Endicott, we were concerned that we would have the energy to go strong for a full 90 but we did. That is a credit to the fitness of our players and also to our bench players who gave us strong minutes when we needed them. We are still a work in progress but this was a good team win and we are feeling good coming home."

Calvin finished the game with a 9-5 shots at goal advantage. Giantsopoulos collected two saves to post his second shutout of the season and the 14th of his Calvin career.

Calvin will return to action next Tuesday when it hosts Great Lakes Christian College at 4 p.m. in the home opener for the Knights at Zuidema Field.

For the third time this weekend the number-one ranked Knights swept their opponent, taking down the Saints 25-12, 25-17, 25-14.

Calvin got off to a solid start, taking an early 7-1 lead in the first set before the Saints called timeout. The visitors held their own until the Knights pulled away, increasing their lead to double digits (17-7), after a couple Saints errors and a service ace by Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, MI/South Christian HS). Calvin cruised to a 25-12 set one victory.

Energy early from big kills by Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian) and Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, ON/Toronto District Christian HS) set the tone for set two. Kamp logged six kills in the set and Van Laare five as Calvin earned a 25-17 victory over its visitors.

Blankespoor started off the set with a service ace and Laura Danhoff added to the effort with a solo block and a kill. The Saints struggled to put down their kills while Maggie Kamp put two down to give her team a 8-1 lead, forcing Thomas More to call timeout. The Saints cut the lead to five (13-8) after a five-point run, but the Knights proceeded to outscore Thomas More 12-6 to close out the match.

Maggie Kamp led all players with 15 kills while Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) and Van Laare finished with eight kills apiece.
