The Calvin women's volleyball team hosted the Belles of Saint Mary's College on Friday night. Saint Mary's came in looking to move into a top four spot in the conference, sitting in fifth place with a 6-6 conference mark, while the Knights were looking to stay just a game behind first place Hope with the rivalry match-up looming next Wednesday.
Calvin swept the Belles earlier this season 26-24, 25-19, 25-12.
Just like the first meeting, the Knights beat Saint Mary's in straight sets 25-21, 25-12, 25-11, but not without a difficult first set.
In the opening set, Saint Mary's played strong defense to stick with Calvin early. The Belles took a 9-8 lead to begin the match, holding the Knights to a -.059 hitting percentage. The Knights recovered, but only to take a one point lead. The teams went back and forth, and it wasn't until 23-20 that Calvin saw its lead grow to more than two points. A kill by junior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) then finished the first set in the Knights favor 25-21.
Calvin recovered to hit .250 in the opening set.
In set two, Calvin re-found its offensive swing. Led by Kamp, the Knights hit .395 in the second set, with Kamp contributing eight kills on 14 attempts. Calvin led from start to finish, earning a 25-12 second set win.
The Knights hit even better in set three. Seven more kills from Kamp and six from sophomore Kelly Bos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) proved to be too much for the Belles as Calvin took the third set 25-11 behind a sizzling .548 percentage.
The Knights played strong defense at the net, totaling nine team blocks, while also holding the Belles to a .059 hitting percentage.
Individually, Kamp had 18 kills and ten digs while sophomore Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS), senior Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS), and senior Stacey Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) all added seven. Senior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) led Calvin with 15 digs while freshman Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS) had 38 assists.
"I felt like we struggled tonight to get rhythm and flow, and then I looked at the stats and we were hitting .390. Sometimes you struggle and you still come through, and that's what we did tonight - our passing wasn't quite there," said head coach Amber Warners. "We were certainly solid at the net. We've been working hard on (the block), and it's nice to see something you work on start having results."
With the win, Calvin improves to 11-1 in the league and 21-3 overall while Saint Mary's falls to 6-7 in the MIAA and 11-10 overall.
The Knights now have a quick turnaround as they play Alma on Saturday. First serve versus the Scots is set for 1 p.m.
