KALAMAZOO - The Calvin men's soccer team continued its torrid offensive output on Wednesday night, defeating host Kalamazoo College 3-0. Now owners of an 11-game win streak, Calvin improves to 12-2-0 overall and 9-0-0 in the MIAA.
In conference play, 12th-ranked Calvin has now outscored MIAA opponents 33-2.
Calvin led 2-0 at halftime, using first half goals from senior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and junior Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Vegter scored in the 14th minute of play, whipping in a shot off a pass from sophomore Isky VanDoorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS). The goal was the 17th of the season for Vegter and the 61st of his career.
In the 33rd minute of play, Vegter was able to steal a loose ball in the defensive backfield of Kalamazoo and slip a pass to a wide-open Pruis who deposited a shot into an empty net for his fifth goal of the season.
Calvin then closed out the scoring in the second half on a goal by junior Sam Hanover (St. Johns/St. Johns HS) in the 75th minute of play. Freshman Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth/Frankenmuth HS)) was credited with an assist on the play as he lofted a corner kick into the box that Hanover was able to rip in with a flying header for his first goal of the season.
Junior goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos (Markham, ON/St. Augustine Catholic HS) picked up his sixth shutout victory of the year, recording four saves in the win.
Calvin held a 14-10 shots at goal advantage on the Hornets (7-5-1 overall, 5-3-1 MIAA).
"Kalamazoo is a really good team and to get a win against an opponent like this on the road is big for our team," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "I thought we were once again very opportunistic on offense but more importantly it was a complete team effort. Everyone chipped in to get this shutout victory."
Calvin will now prepare to travel to rival Hope on Saturday night for a 7 p.m. game at Hope's Van Andel Stadium. The Flying Dutch trail Calvin in the MIAA standings by six points.
The game will once again feature a "Night of Nets" theme with fans from each team able to purchase commemorative t-shirts in their own school colors. Proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go to help purchase mosquito nets to help prevent malaria in Africa.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams will open their 2014-15 campaigns on Saturday at the MIAA Relays at the Holland Aquatic Center.
A year ago, the Calvin women's team captured its 10th consecutive MIAA title while the Calvin men's team captured its first-ever league crown.
