By Mark DeHaan
The Calvin women's volleyball team hosted Kalamazoo College on Tuesday evening, looking to extend its win streak to seven. Earlier in the season, the Hornets pushed the Knights to four sets at Kalamazoo 23-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-16.
This time around, Calvin, ranked fourth in the nation, swept Kalamazoo 25-20, 25-9, 25-16.
With the win, Calvin hit the 20-win plateau for the 20th consecutive year including the 13th straight year under current head coach Amber Warners.
Out of the gate, Kalamazoo gave the Knights all they could handle. The teams played each other point-for-point early on before the Hornets went on a run to take a 10-6 lead. Calvin responded to tie the game at 14-14 after forcing Kalamazoo into a pair of errors. The teams traded the next four points before the Knights claimed six straight to take a 22-16 lead. Calvin then closed out the first set 25-20.
In set two, the Knights got out to a much stronger start, taking a 9-3 lead before a Kalamazoo timeout. Calvin continued to dominate, and despite another timeout from the Hornets, rolled to a 25-9 win in the second set.
The Knights continued their strong play into the third set, taking an early 9-2 lead. The Hornets drew to within five at 14-9, but that is as close as Kalamazoo would come as Calvin took the third and final set 25-16.
The Knights hit .343 as a team while holding Kalamazoo to just .093.
Individually, junior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) led Calvin with 15 kills. Sophomore Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) added nine and senior Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS) tallied seven. Senior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) led the Knights with 20 digs while freshman Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, IL/Illiana Christian HS) totaled 35 assists.
"I thought we played pretty well (in the first set), but I though Kalamazoo responded really well to everything we did - I'd like to give them credit for playing good defense," said head coach Amber Warners. "Emotionally, we started a little bit slow, and we've been working on that, but I love that after the first ten points, we really played steady and our defense got better and we got more confident."
The Knights improve to 20-3 overall and 10-1 in conference play with the win, while Kalamazoo drops to 9-15 overall and 4-8 in the MIAA.
Calvin now looks forward to Friday when it hosts Saint Mary's, with first serve set for 7 p.m.
