The Knights hosted the Trine Thunder on Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena in their second meeting of the season. The fifth-ranked Calvin women's volleyball team ended Trine's six-match win streak, sweeping the Thunder 25-19, 25-20, 25-18.
Sophomore Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) led the Knights with 13 kills while hitting .476; Danhoff also had three block assists. Maggie Kamp (Orland Park IL/Chicago Christian HS) had a stellar all-around performance, collecting 10 kills and contributing 11 digs. Sophomore Kelly Bos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) added seven kills.
Freshman setter Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS) dished out 27 assists, eight digs and two service aces. Senior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) recorded 20 digs along with 2 service aces. Stacey Kamp had three block assists. Freshman Emily Blankespoor provided 10 digs for the Knights.
Calvin's coach, Amber Warners, was impressed with the steadiness that her team played with. "We played with a lot of passion, fire and energy last night." (Calvin defeated Albion Friday night 25-15, 25-14, 25-11 at Kresge Gymnasium) "It's hard to carry that high level of energy over to the next day, but I think we played with consistency. We have been working on having a 'short memory' after we make mistakes, and I think we did a good job with that tonight." Coach Warners also credited the team's success mainly to their solid defense and passing.
Calvin is now 17-3 overall and 9-1 in the MIAA while Trine is 13-3 overall and 6-3 in the MIAA. The Knights remain in second place in the league while the Thunder also hold their spot in third place.
The Knights hope to add to their four-match win streak on Friday, October 10 when they host Wheaton (Ill.) at 2 p.m. in their first game of the Calvin Midwest Invitation. Later that night, at 7 p.m., Calvin will match up against the DePauw Tigers.

ALBION - The Calvin men's soccer team traveled to Albion to face the Britons in a weekend conference contest.
The Knights came into the game with a 5-0 conference mark and atop the MIAA table, while Albion sat in fourth at 3-3 in league play.
Receiving a pair of second half goals from junior Nick Groenewold and senior Travis Vegter, the Knights remained undefeated in the MIAA with a 2-0 victory.
In the first half, both teams played strong defensively as there were just six total shots, none of which found the back of the net.
The Knights then broke through the Britons defense in the second half.
In the 69th minute, Calvin earned a penalty kick after senior Sean Broekhuizen went up for a header and was knocked down in the box. Stepping up to the spot, defender Nick Groenewold found the back of the net for the Knights, giving them a 1-0 lead.
In the 75th minute, Travis Vegter added an insurance goal by scoring his 13th goal of the season. Sophomore David Waterson played a nice ball ahead to Vegter who pushed it past the keeper to put the Calvin advantage at 2-0.
The Knights then held Albion off for the remainder of the contest, and they claimed their sixth straight conference victory.
Calvin outshot the Britons 14-6 for the game. Junior goalkeeper Niko Giantsopoulos made six saves in net to earn the clean sheet for the Knights.
"Albion is a good team and it's a tough place to play," said head coach Ryan Souders. "They were committed to their game plan, but I'm proud of our guys for showing resiliency on the road and getting the three points on a windy, gloomy day."
With the win, Calvin improves to 6-0 in conference and 9-2 overall while Albion falls to 3-3 in league and 5-6 overall.
Next up for the Knights are the Comets of Olivet College. Calvin will travel to Olivet on Tuesday for the match-up at the Cutler Events Center, with kickoff scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Hope 3, Calvin 0
By Mark DeHaan
The Knights hosted the rival Flying Dutch of Hope College on an overcast Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field. Calvin entered with a 4-3 MIAA record, looking to continue its four game win streak, while the Flying Dutch were looking to rebound after losing their first conference contest against Kalamazoo on Wednesday.
Showing their senior mentality and seeking revenge for three loses against Calvin last season, the Flying Dutch came out strong offensively, outshooting the Knights 21-8 for the game and scoring three to down Calvin 3-0.
In the first half, the Knights mustered a single shot. Hope, meanwhile, totaled 12 shots and took the lead in the 31st minute.
A cross was sent into the Calvin box off a corner kick. The Knights were unable to clear the ball its first time through, and pouncing on the ball at the back post was Hope's Lindsey Bieri, who put the ball into the back of the net for the early lead.
The Flying Dutch held the 1-0 advantage through the break while also building a 6-1 edge in corner kicks over the course of the opening half.
In the second half, Hope scored to quick goals to increase its lead to three.
In the 49th minute, Nora Kirk of Hope took a pass and found the bottom right corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Less than five minutes later, Kirk added a second goal. A cross slipped through the Calvin box and to the feet of a waiting Kirk, who was all alone. In similar fashion to her first goal, Kirk found the bottom right corner of the goal and gave the Flying Dutch a 3-0 lead.
Calvin's best opportunity came in the 66th minute, when junior Taylor TenHarmsel put a chip-shot toward goal which went off the crossbar.
Hope continued to pressure the Knights goal over the remainder of the contest, but could not add another score as the game ended 3-0.
The Flying Dutch outshot the Knights 21-8 for the game while also holding an 11-3 edge in corner kicks. Calvin freshman goalie made four saves in net for the Knights.
"Hope was aggressive. As you watched the progression of the game, you saw they wouldn't let up or give up," said head coach Mark Recker. "We had chances, perhaps, to be a little more efficient. We had a nice series of four wins in a row, and we ran into a highly emotional team (in Hope). You have to deal with that early and try and take the emotion out of the game, but we missed the opportunities in the first half to put the ball in the net."
Calvin completes the first half of its conference schedule with the loss, moving to 4-4 in league play and 5-6 overall. Hope improves to 7-1 in the MIAA and 8-3 overall with the win.
The Knights now look forward to Wednesday when they travel to Alma, with kickoff set for 4:00 p.m. Calvin lost to the Scots 2-1 in overtime in the two teams' meeting earlier this season.
