Volleyball Extends Win Streak With Victory at Albion;
Cross Country Teams Run Well at Notre Dame Invitational/Lansing Invitational
VOLLEYBALL
ALBION - The fifth-ranked Calvin women's cross country team picked up its third consecutive victory with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-11 win at Albion Friday night inside Kresge Gymnasium.
Calvin's offensive attack continued to cruise at a high rate as the Knights hit .380 as a team in the win.
Sophomore Kelly Bos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) collected a career-high 11 kills in the victory while hitting .500. Calvin featured a balanced offensive attack as junior Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had nine kills, sophomore Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) eight kills and senior Stacey Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) seven kills. Senior Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS) and freshman Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, IL/Timothy Christian HS) added six kills apiece.
Lodewyk pumped out 34 assists, nine digs and three service aces. Senior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS) also had a stellar all-around game with 11 digs, five assists and a service aces. Maggie Kamp also contributed three service aces while Danhoff had three block solos and two block assists. Stacey Kamp had two block assists.
Junior Jamie Kooiman (Eugene, OR/South Eugene HS) also had 10 digs while freshman Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) came off the bench to provide seven digs and one assist.
"It was a good team effort tonight," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners. "I thought we served aggresively and got our offense into a pretty good rythymn. We have to turn around and do it again tomorrow because Trine is coming to our building and they are playing very well right now."
The Calvin/Trine matchup on Saturday will begin at 1 p.m. inside Calvin's Van Noord Arena. The Knights are currently 16-3 overall and 8-1 in the MIAA while Trine is 13-2 overall and 6-2 in the MIAA.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The Calvin men's cross country team had a solid showing in the Gold Division of the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday, placing 12th with a team score of 298 points. Ranked 25th nationally, Calvin was fourth amongst Division III institutions. Top-ranked North Central was second overall with 82 points while 16th-ranked Wabash was ninth with 271 points and 28th-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh 11th with 287 points.
Sophomore Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) was Calvin's top finisher in a time of 24:37 which was good for 18th place.
Senior Josh Ferguson (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) had one of his top races of the year, placing 58th in 25:23 while senior Steven Haagsma (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) was 64th (25:27) and senior Stephen Tubergen (Mount Prospect, IL/John Hersey HS) 67th (25:28).
Calvin's fifth man was junior Bret Habura (Washingtonville, NY/Washingtonville HS) who placed 98th (25:51).
Rounding out Calvin's top seven were freshman Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) in 102nd (25:50) and junior Ethan Anderson (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater Area HS) in 106th (25:59).
Grand Valley took first place in the Notre Dame Gold Division with 71 points.
Another group of Calvin runners competed at the Lansing Community College Invitational Friday afternoon. Calvin placed second with 69 points with a team from Grand Valley State winning with 47 points.
Freshman Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) led the way for the Knights, placing fourth individually in 26:02. Junior Jonathan Gingrich (Powell, OH/Olentangy Liberty HS) was ninth in 26:20, sophomore Nathan VanHaitsma (Olympia, WA/Olympia HS) 14th in 26:27, sophomore Jonathan Schaap (Mahomet, IL/Mahomet-Seymour HS) 22nd in 26:49 and sophomore Robbie Hohlman (Naperville, IL/Neuqua Valley HS) in 26th (26:55) to round out Calvin's top five.
Calvin returns to action next Friday when it competes at the Muskegon Jayhawk Invitational.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The Calvin women's cross country team had a solid showing at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational, placing 11th with 292 points. Calvin was the top finishing Division III team in the race.
Calvin's top performer was sophomore Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, MN/St. Croix Prepatory HS) in 20th place (17:25). She was also the top finishing Division III runner. Senior Sarah Danner (Watkins Glenn, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) was 47th in 17:47 while senior Paige McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) was 70th (18:02).
Rounding out Calvin's top seven were senior Kimby Penning (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) in 73rd (18:04), sophomore Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in 93rd (18:15), sophomore Lauren Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) in 146th (18:45) and senior Rachel Folkema (Renfrew, ON/Renfrew Collegiate Institute) in 154th (18:56).
Grand Valley State took first place with 56 points.
A group of Calvin runners also competed at the Lansing Community College Invitational, placing 3rd with a team score of 105 points.
Freshman Katherine McLain (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) was the top finisher in the race for Calvin, placing 13th in 19:36. Junior Marly May (Naperville, IL/Naperville North HS) was 22nd (20:03), sophomore Kristen Brink (Dyer, IN/Illiana Christian HS) 24th (20:05), sophomore Alex Childs (Rockford, IL/Rockford Christian HS) 32nd (20:15) and freshman Catherine Croft (Coopersville/Coopersville HS) 33rd (20:16).
Siena Heights took first place with 64 points.
Calvin returns to action next Friday, competing at the Muskegon Jayhawk Invitational.
