MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 4, Alma 0

ALMA - The Calvin men's soccer team opened up its 2014 MIAA slate with an impressive 4-0 victory at Alma College.

The Knights (4-2-0 overall, 1-0-0 MIAA) scored three goals in the first half and added one more in the second to close out the win.

Senior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) scored a pair of goals and added one assist for the Knights. In doing so, Vegter moved past Joel Veldhouse and into third place on the Calvin career list for goals as he now has 50 in his career. He also moved into a tie for fourth place on the Calvin career list for points with Mark Recker with 118 points.

Sophomore Isky Van Doorne (Calgary, AB/Western Canada HS) opened the scoring for Calvin in the 17th minute, blasting in a free kick from 35 yards out. Just over six minutes later, sophomore Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) tickled the twine, ripping in a shot from 18 yards out after receiving a well-placed pass from Vegter.

Vegter then scored late in the first half with senior Reed Bowden (Uxbridge, MA/Whitinsville Christian HS) and junior Sam Hanover (St. Johns/St. Johns HS) receiving assists on the play.

In the second half, Vegter scored his second goal of the game, whipping in a rebound shot to complete the scoring.

Both teams finished with 13 shots at goal but Calvin junior goalkeeper Niko Giantsopolous (Markham, ON/St. Augustine Catholic HS) posted a clean sheet, recording two saves.

"I thought we moved the ball well and created good scoring chances," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "I was proud of our overall work rate. It was good to get a shutout and most importantly it was good to get three points in the league standings in a game on the road."

Calvin returns home on Saturday when it will host Kalamazoo at 2:30 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
