Men's Soccer Team Pegged as MIAA Preseason Favorite
MEN'S SOCCER
The Calvin men's soccer team has been picked as the league favorite in the MIAA preseason coaches' poll released this afternoon.
The Knights received six first place votes while Hope (2nd) and Olivet (3rd) both received one first place vote. Kalamazoo was picked to finish fourth followed by Albion in fifth, Alma in sixth, Adrian in seventh and Trine in eighth.
Calvin enters the season as seven-time defending MIAA regular season champions. Calvin returns three first team All-MIAA selections from last year's 2013 team that finished 14-5-1 overall and 12-2-0 in the MIAA. Senior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) was not only a first team All-MIAA selection last fall but was also named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player and a Division III NSCAA First Team All-American. Senior Sean Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS) and junior Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) were also first team All-MIAA and All-Central Region selections as well.
Sophomore Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) also returns after being named the 2013 MIAA Newcomer of the Year as well as earning a spot on the All-MIAA second team.
The Knights are scheduled to open their season on August 29 against eighth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan at Calvin's Zuidema Field with opening kick set for 4 p.m.
Another early-season highlight will include a journey to 15th-ranked Wheaton (IL) on September 5. The Calvin/Wheaton game will start at 8 p.m. (EDT) and will also be featured as NSCAATV.com's National Game of the Week via a live web-stream broadcast.
Calvin will open its MIAA campaign on September 17 when it travels to Alma for a 4 p.m. match.
