CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR AUGUST 14, 2014

Women's Soccer Picked to Repeat as MIAA Champions

WOMEN'S SOCCER

The defending MIAA champion Calvin women's soccer team has been picked to claim its third consecutive league title by the league coaches.

In the MIAA preseason coaches' poll, Calvin was picked as the league favorite, receiving eight first place votes. Rival Hope received one first place vote and was picked to finish second followed by Alma in third and Saint Mary's in fourth.

Under the direction of head coach Mark Recker, Calvin finished 19-3-2 a year ago while capturing MIAA regular season and MIAA Tournament titles. The Knights then advanced to the NCAA III Tournament for the second straight year and for the eighth time in the last nine years.

In a first round NCAA III Tournament triumph over Aurora last November, Recker collected his 200th victory at the helm of the Calvin women's soccer program.

Calvin returns 13 letterwinners from last year's team including first team All-MIAA selections Taylor TenHarmsel (Holland/Holland Christian HS) and Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) and second team All-MIAA selections Sydney Kinney (Ada/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Kelsey Hiegel (Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS).

The Knights were recently ranked 24th nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason Top 25 poll.

Calvin is scheduled to open its season on August 29 against Webster University (MO) in a tournament hosted by Augustana University (IL).
