Volleyball Claims Top Spot in AVCA Division III Top 25 Poll
VOLLEYBALL
Calvin College is the top-ranked team in the preseason American Volleyball Coaches Association's Division III Top 25 poll released late this afternoon. The defending national champion Knights received 56 first place votes with Emory ranked second with three first place votes. Wisconsin-Steven Point is ranked third and Hope College ranked fourth. Hope received one first place vote in the poll.
Calvin and Hope both spent time in the AVCA Division III Top 25 poll in 2013 with Calvin holding the top spot for a total of eight weeks while Hope was ranked number-one in three separate weeks.
Wednesday's preseason national poll completed an unusual day of polls for Calvin and Hope. Earlier in the day, Hope was selected as the preseason favorite in the MIAA's preseason coaches' poll with six first place votes while Calvin was picked to finish second, receiving three first place votes.
The two rivals split their regular season matches against each other in 2013 with Calvin later defeating Hope in the MIAA Tournament finals in five sets.
Both teams advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin finished its national championship season with an overall record of 35-1 while Hope bowed out in the quarterfinals and finished 32-3 with two of its losses coming to Calvin and the other coming to Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Calvin is scheduled to open its 2014 season August 29 and 30 when it travels to a tournament hosted by 20th-ranked Clarkson University (NY).
