Calvin Alumni Golf Outing Information
VOLLEYBALL
The 2013 MIAA volleyball season provided a neck-and-neck competition between rivals Calvin and Hope. According to the 2014 MIAA preseason coaches' poll, more of the same is expected this fall.
Hope College has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2013 MIAA volleyball championship with Calvin picked to finish second.
The Flying Dutch received six first place votes in the preseason poll with Calvin receiving three. Saint Mary's was selected to finish third, followed by Trine, Alma, Kalamazoo, Olivet, Adrian and Albion.
A year ago, the two rivals shared the final MIAA regular season title with 15-1 league records with each school holding serve against each other at home. Calvin later captured the MIAA Tournament title, defeating Hope in a closely fought five-set match at Calvin's Van Noord Arena. Both teams not only advanced to the NCAA III Tournament but also reached the national quarterfinals at Hope's DeVos Fieldhouse. Hope fell in the quarterfinals to Wisconsin-Stevens Point while Calvin won three matches in Holland including a five-set victory over Cal Lutheran in national championship final, allowing the Knights to capture their second national title in four years.
Calvin returns an experienced squad.
The Knights return a pair of All-Americans in junior outsider hitter Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) and senior middle hitter Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka Penn HS). A first team All-America selection in 2013, Kamp was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2013 NCAA III Finals after recording a career-high 28 kills in the national final against Cal Lutheran. Crowe meanwhile was named a third team All-American. Other returning starters for Calvin include senior outside hitters Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS) and Stacey Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) and sophomore middle hitter Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS).
Calvin opens its 2014 campaign August 29 and 30 at a tournament hosted by Clarkson University of New York. The home opener for the Knights is Tuesday, September 2, against Albion College.
Calvin and Hope are scheduled to meet in MIAA regular season play on September 20 (at Hope) and October 22 (at Calvin).
