SOFTBALL

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - The Calvin softball team opened its season on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Goshen College. The twinbill was played at a softball complex in Indianapolis to provide for better playing conditions.

In the opener, Calvin gained an 8-0 triumph but dropped a tough 5-3 decision in the nightcap.

In the 8-0 win, senior Caitlin Callow (Muskegon/Muskegon Catholic Central HS) tossed a complete-game shutout victory. As a team, Calvin collected 12 hits with sophomore Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) coming up with a three-run homer to lead the charge while freshman Cassidy Vlot (Chowchilla, CA/Chowchilla HS) had a pair of doubles and junior Kelsey Pollock (Greenville/Belding HS) a double.

In game two, Calvin fell behind 5-1 as the Maple Leafs scored a pair of unearned runs to build a lead. Calvin battled back with two runs in the final two innings but could not come all the way back.

Vlot took the loss for Calvin in the pitcher's circle. She also had two hits as did junior Merin Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and senior Janelle Agren (Cadillac/Cadillac HS).

Calvin was scheduled to face Cornerstone on Wednesday in a doubleheader but that twinbill has been postponed because of weather with a makeup date not certain. Calvin is scheduled to host Wheaton (IL) on Thursday in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. over at Davenport University in Caledonia.

BASEBALL

The Calvin baseball game scheduled with Kalamazoo for Wednesday evening has been postponed because of weather. The game will be made up on March 31 at Kalamazoo's Woodworth Field. The two teams have played one game of a scheduled four-game series - a 9-3 Calvin triumph last Friday. They will play two games while on spring break in Florida on March 24 with the final game coming on March 31.
