Travis Vegter Named MIAA Most Valuable Player in Men's Soccer/Stephan Hooker Named MIAA Freshman of the Year

MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin College junior Travis Vegter has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player in men's soccer. Calvin freshman Stephan Hooker has also been named the MIAA's Freshman of the Year. In addition, six Calvin players have received All-MIAA honors as Vegter, senior Zach Willis, junior Sean Broekhuizen and sophomore Taylor Pruis have been named to the first team while senior Ben Honeycutt and Hooker have been named to the second team. Calvin captured the MIAA regular season title this year for the seventh consecutive season, finishing 12-2-0 in conference play and 14-5-1 overall.

All-MIAA First Team
Travis Vegter - A junior from Hudsonville and a Unity Christian High School graduate, Travis Vegter is making his second straight appearance on the All-MIAA First Team. Vegter led the MIAA in points with 39 on the strength of 17 goals, also first, and five assists. In total, Vegter tallied 27 goals and six assists on the year for the Knights. Vegter's 27 goal total is the second highest season total in Calvin's history. Vegter was also named the league's Most Valuable Player, making Vegter the second Knight in a row to earn the award.

Sean Broekhuizen - Broekhuizen, a native of Grand Rapids and graduate of South Christian High School, has been named first team All-MIAA for the first time in his career. A junior, Broekhuizen spent time between midfield and defense for the Knights. Broekhuizen scored five goals and had five assists, and aided the Knights to shutout victories over Albion and Alma down the stretch as Calvin claimed the MIAA Regular Season Championship.

Taylor Pruis - Calvin's Taylor Pruis is being awarded All-MIAA First Team honors for the first time in his career. A sophomore from Grand Rapids and a Grand Rapids Christian High School graduate, Pruis led the MIAA with 12 assists in conference play. Pruis's regular season total of 17 assists ties the single season Calvin record, set in 1991 and 2005 by Joey Barone and Nick Capisciolto. Pruis added five goals on the season for 27 points, second on Calvin's squad.

Zach Willis - A senior from Wyoming and a graduate of Unity Christian High School, Willis is being honored All-MIAA First Team for the second time in his career. Also an All-MIAA First Team member in 2011, Willis was second in the MIAA in assists with eight in league play. Willis totaled 10 assists as well as seven goals during the regular season for 24 points, third on the Knights.

All-MIAA Second Team
Ben Honeycutt - A native of Grandville and graduate of South Christian High School, Honeycutt was a key member of a Calvin defense which posted six shutouts on the season. A four-year member of varsity, Honeycutt played in 81 of a possible 92 matches throughout the four years, starting each game of his final two seasons.

Stephan Hooker - A freshman from Hudsonville and Unity Christian High School graduate, Hooker was named the MIAA Newcomer of the Year for the 2013 season. Hooker was fifth in the MIAA in points on the conference season, tallying all seven of his goals and three of his assists in conference play.
