Calvin Volleyball Players Receive Great Lakes All-Region Honors
VOLLEYBALL
The Great Lakes All-Region volleyball teams have been selected and five members of the Calvin College volleyball team have receive regional accolades.
Seniors Megan Rietema and Kristen Zietse along with junior Emily Crowe and sophomore Maggie Kamp have been named to the Great Lakes All-Region team. Freshman Laura Danhoff has been named the Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year and has also been named a Great Lakes All-Region honorable mention recipient.
Rietema is receiving Great Lakes All-Region honors for the fourth consecutive year. A native of Grand Rapids, Rietema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) has been a four-year starter at setter on the Calvin volleyball team. She was named the Most Outstanding Player at a season-opening tournament hosted by the University of Puget Sound and landed all-tournament honors at the Wittenberg Fall Classic. She is averaging nearly 10 assists and two kills-per-set along with an attack percentage of .346. She has come one statistic shy of notching a triple-double on five occasions this fall. Last week she was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player and landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the fourth straight year.
Zietse is also from Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. A back row player throughout her four-year career, she has moved into Calvin's starting libero spot this fall. She is averaging 4.77 digs-per-set and has a team-leading 32 service aces on the year. Last week she was named the MIAA's Defensive Player of the Year and also landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team.
Crowe (Mishawaka Penn HS) is from Granger, Indiana. A middle-hitter, she is receiving all-region honors for the first time. Crowe is averaging 2.03 kills and 1.06 blocks-per-set along with an attack percentage of .302. Last week she was named to the All-MIAA second team.
Kamp is from Orland Park, Illinois. She is a graduate of Chicago Christian High School. An outside hitter, Kamp is among the national leaders in kills and point-per-set. She is averaging 4.07 kills and 4.68 points-per-set while hitting at a .320 clip. She was named to the University of Puget Sound Premier Invitational all-tournament team earlier this fall. In mid-October, she was named the AVCA Division III National Player of the Week. She was then named to the All-MIAA first team last weekend.
Danhoff is from Willard, Ohio. She is a graduate of Willard High School. A middle-hitter, she is the fourth individual from Calvin to be named the AVCA Division III Great Lakes Region Freshman of the Year, joining Rebecca Kamp (2008), Lizzie Kamp (2009) and Megan Rietema (2010). Danhoff is averaging 2.09 kills and 0.61 blocks-per-set while holding an attack percentage of .326. Last weekend she was named the MIAA's Freshman of the Year and was voted to the All-MIAA second team.
Calvin is currently 29-1 overall and ranked number-one in the country. The Knights are hosting an eight-team NCAA III regional this weekend at Van Noord Arena and will face Penn State-Behrend in a first round match Thursday at 8 p.m.
