Swimming and Diving Teams Compete Against Grand Valley State/Hillsdale;
Men's Basketball Cracks Preseason Top 25 Rankings

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted dual meet competition Friday night with GLIAC opponents Grand Valley State and Hillsdale. Hillsdale fields a women's team but does not sponsor men's swimming and diving.

In the lone men's dual meet, Grand Valley State defeated Calvin 168-73. On the women's side, Grand Valley defeated Calvin 149-93 but Calvin edged Hillsdale 119-118.

In the women's competition, Calvin received one first place finish as sophomore Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) captured the 100 freestyle in a time of 53.75. Calvin also had four individual second place finishes as junior Rebecca Mumby (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) was second on the one-meter diving board (237.55), senior Kristy Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS) was second in the 100 backstroke (1:01.61) and junior Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Moundsview HS) was second in the 500 freestyle (5:19.87).

On the men's side, sophomore Johnson Cochrane (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon HS) picked up a victory for Calvin the 100 breaststroke with a sizzling time of 58.30. In addition, sophomore Caleb Meindertsma (Annandale, VA/Trinity Christian HS) cruised to a first place finish in the 1,000 freestyle (10:06.61).

Freshman Brett Stoughton (Centerville, IN/Centerville HS) also had a big evening, taking second in the 200 IM (2:00.25) and 100 backstroke (54.11).

Both Calvin teams are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Albion for dual meets slated to start at 1 p.m.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

The Calvin men's basketball team has cracked a pair of preseason Division III Top 25 polls. The Knights are ranked 17th in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll released earlier today. They are also ranked 18th in the preseason poll produced by DIII News. The DIII News poll was released earlier this month.

A year ago, the Calvin men's basketball team finished 26-4 overall and advanced to the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament.

Calvin will open its season on November 7 when it hosts an exhibition game against Ferris State University at Van Noord Arena.
