WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 5, Albion 1
Calvin women's soccer hosted the Britons of Albion Saturday afternoon. After a tough 0-0 tie at Saint Mary's on Wednesday, the Knights were looking to get back into the win column. That is exactly what Calvin did, taking the early lead and not looking back en route to a 5-1 victory.
The Knights got off to a quick start as senior Heidi Scholten found the back of the net in the second minute of the match.
Calvin added to its lead in the 22nd minute as senior Kelly Koets tapped in a cross from sophomore Paige Capel.
Sophomore Taylor TenHarmsel then scored back-to-back goals for the Knights, less than three minutes apart. On the first goal, sophomore Sydney Kinney sent a corner kick into the box which was passed off by sophomore Jenna Bouwer which TenHarmsel would bury.
On the second, Heidi Scholten made a fantastic run up top, beating a pair of Albion defenders then finding TenHarmsel who was perfectly position in the center of the box for an open look at net which she finished.
Leading 4-0 at the half, Calvin held a 14-0 shots advantage and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Out of the break, Calvin added its fifth goal as Scholten again made a good run to the end line, finding Bouwer in the middle of the field for her first goal of the season.
In the 83rd minute, the Britons added their only goal of the game as attacker Kristine Graham caught freshman goalkeeper Emily Lawson out of the net and chipped the ball over and into the goal.
"Coach Recker decided to change the field players right from the start, and that opened up our movement," said assistant coach Casey TerHaar. "The fact that we are at home, finally, after three (conference games), that was a real confidence booster as well."
Calvin outshot Albion 26-6. Substitute keeper Emily Lawson made three saves in net while senior starter Ashton Hearn earned the win.
The Knights are now 2-1-1 in the MIAA and 5-1-1 overall while Albion drops to 0-5 in conference and 2-6 overall. Calvin's next contest is Tuesday when they will host the Bulldogs of Adrian at 4:00 p.m.
