CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPT. 20, 2013
Men's Soccer Outlasts Conditions to Pick Up 5-0 Win at Bluffton
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 5, Bluffton 0
CBLUFFTON, OH - The Calvin men's soccer team found a way to outlast a torrential thunderstorm and a lengthy mid-game delay on Friday to record a 5-0 non-conference victory at Bluffton University.
Calvin (2-3-0 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute of play as sophomore Sam Hanover (Saint Johns, MI/Saint Johns HS) scored off an assist from junior Sean Broekhuizen (Grand Rapids/South Christian HS).
A few minutes later, the skies opened and a two-hour weather delay ensued because of torrential thunderstorms that swept through the area.
When the game resumed at 6:30 p.m., the Knights were ready to go with their own lightning strike, scoring three goals in a span of eight minutes. Junior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) lit the spark with back-to-back goals on feeds from sophomore Taylor Pruis (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS). Vegter's first goal came in the 37th minute and his second in the 43rd minute.
With just 30 seconds remaining in the first half, senior Zach Willis (Wyoming/Unity Christian HS) scored his second goal of the season, converting a pass from Hanover.
Just over four minutes into the second half, Vegter notched his first collegiate hat-trick, scoring a goal off an assist from Hanover. The hat-trick performance bumped Vegter's season goal total to nine.
Calvin substituted liberally over the final 20 minutes of play and held strong for the win.
The Knights outshot Bluffton 25-12. Junior goalkeeper Andrew Claucherty (Sterling Heights, MI/Bishop Foley HS) had nine saves in goal for Calvin to gain the shutout win.
Calvin is back in action on September 25 when it travels to Trine for a 4 p.m. game.
