Calvin 3, Olivet 0
Calvin remained unbeaten on the 2013 season Saturday afternoon as it defeated visiting Olivet 25-10, 25-11, 25-10 at Van Noord Arena. Ranked second nationally, the Knights are now 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the MIAA.
Calvin clicked on all cylinders right from the opening serve as the Maroon and Gold hit at a .462 clip as a team.
Sophomore Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had another huge match, racking up 16 kills, eight digs and an attack percentage of .556.
Freshman Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) had a career-high nine kills and a hitting percentage of .643.
Senior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had four kills, 31 assists and six digs.
Senior libero Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) added a career-high six service aces to go with nine digs.
As a team, Calvin had 12 service aces as junior Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian HS), Rietema and junior Laura Hop (Holland/Holland Christian HS) added two aces apiece.
"I thought we played well, particularly since we were coming off a tough match last night at Alma on the road," said Calvin head coach Amber Warners. "Whenever you serve 12 aces in a three-set match, things are going well. The goal right now is to continue to get better. We have several tough matches ahead of us so we will need to continue to step our game up."
Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it travels to Trine for a 6:30 p.m. match.
WOMEN'S GOLF
MARSHALL - The Calvin women's golf team finished the two-day, 36-hole Olivet Fall Invitational Tournament in 13th place with a final team score of 724 strokes. Bethel College (IN) led the 18-team field with a final team score of 637 strokes.
Calvin opened the tournament on Friday with a team score of 360 on Friday but slipped back a few strokes on Saturday with a team score of 364.
Senior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led the Knights overall with a two-day total of 163 strokes (76-87) that was good for 12th place individually. Sophomore Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) was next at 176 (87-89).
Sophomore Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) had a strong Saturday showing, carding a round of 86 to finish with a 186 (100-86). Rounding out Calvin's finishers were sophomore Sarah Arendsen (Wayland/Wayland HS) at 199 (97-102) and freshman Amira Bousaab (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS) at 216 (107-109).
Amy Worthington of Trine University earned overall medalist honors with a two-day total of 154 (78-76).
Calvin is back in action on Tuesday, competing at the North Central Classic in Naperville, Illinois.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, North Park 1 (OT)
MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - For the second straight night, Calvin was golden in overtime as the Knights scored a sudden-death "golden goal" to defeat North Park 2-1 in overtime in the championship game of the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raider Invitational. The victory came on the heels of a 1-0 overtime victory over Loras College the night before for Calvin.
The Knights are now 3-0 on the year heading into MIAA play which begins in earnest on Monday as Calvin will travel to league rival Alma for a 4 p.m. contest.
In Saturday's overtime win over North Park, Calvin trailed 1-0 early but came back to tie the game on a goal by sophomore Taylor Ten Harmsel (Holland/Holland Christian HS) midway through the first half.
Calvin then cranked up the pressure in the second half, peppering the North Park goal including a shot late in the second half by sophomore Paige Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) that rang off the cross bar.
Calvin finally broke through 2:22 into the first overtime as freshman Allie Corp (Livonia/Stevenson HS) took a through ball pass from Capel and slipped a shot past the North Park goalkeeper for the game-winner.
Calvin held a 22-8 shots at goal advantage including a 13-1 advantage in the second half. Senior goalkeeper Ashton Hearn (Port Huron MI/Port Huron Northern HS) collected five saves in goal for the Knights.
At the conclusion of the tournament, senior Kelly Koets (Grandville/Calvin Christian HS) was named the tournament's most outstanding offensive player while sophomore defender Kelsey Hiegel (Mundelein, IL/Mundelein HS) was named the tournament's most outstanding defensive player.
Koets and Hiegel were both named to the all-tournament team as were Hearn, Ten Harmsel and senior midfielder Danielle Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt HS).
MEN'S SOCCER
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Repeated lightning strikes caused the cancellation of the MSOE men's soccer match with Calvin Saturday afternoon. The game was called with just over 33 minutes remaining and the scored tied at 1-1. According to NCAA rules, the result and statistics will not count.
The match was the consolation contest for the Raider Invitational.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Calvin junior Travis Vegter was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Offensive player after scoring two goals in Friday's game vs Loras.
Vegter was also named to the all-tournament team and joined on the all-tournament team by freshman teammate Stephan Hooker (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS).
