MEN'S SOCCER
Loras 3, Calvin 2
MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The Calvin men's soccer team dropped another hard-fought contest on Friday, falling 3-2 to the nationally-ranked DuHawks of Loras College in a first round game of the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raider Classic.
A national semifinalist a year ago and ranked third nationally, Loras (3-0-0) took a 1-0 lead on a goal in the 39th minute of play.
Calvin (0-3-0) was able to tie the game at one on a goal by junior Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) in the 52nd minute with senior Ben Honeycutt (Grandville/South Christian HS) drawing an assist on the play.
The Knights then suffered two bad breaks on long free kicks. The first came on an "own" goal as a Loras free kick was mistakenly headed backward into the Calvin goal by a Knight defender in the 60th minute. In the 68th minute, another long free kick was sent into the Calvin box. The free kick was not touched and subsequently took a hard bounce up and over Calvin goalkeeper Andrew Claucherty (Sterling Heights/Bishop Foley HS) and into the net to give the Duhawks a 3-1 lead.
Calvin came back to within a goal at 3-2 as Vegter scored on an unassisted goal with 14 minutes left to play but the Knights could not score again. The goal by Vegter was his team-leading fifth goal of the year.
Loras finished with an 18-5 shots at goal advantage. Claucherty had seven saves in nets for the Knights.
Calvin will take on Milwaukee School of Engineering in the consolation game on Saturday at noon.
