Women's Golf Fourth at MIAA Spring Qualifying Tournament;
Men's Tennis Defeats Adrian 9-0
WOMEN'S GOLF
SOUTH BEND, IN - The Calvin women's golf team took fourth place at the first
MIAA spring qualifying tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Blackthorn Golf
Club. Calvin posted a team score of 370 with Hope third (361), host Saint
Mary's second (353) and Olivet first (330).
The tournament is the first of three spring tournaments consisting of the top
four teams from the MIAA regular season. The team with the top cumulative score
after the three rounds will receive the MIAA's automatic team bid to the NCAA
III Championships. Calvin is making its second straight appearance in the
spring tournament field.
In Wednesday's round, Calvin was led by junior Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port
Huron Northern HS) and senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
Christian HS) with rounds of 92 while freshmen Casey Harkema (Holt/Holt HS) and
Jennie Poole (Summit, NJ/Kent Place School) had rounds of 93.
The next scheduled MIAA spring tournament is scheduled for April 26 at the
Medalist Golf Club with Olivet serving as host.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Adrian 0

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin men’s tennis team won its fourth straight MIAA
match with a 9-0 victory over Adrian in Wed. afternoon. The match was played
inside Calvin’s Huizenga Track and Tennis Center because of rainy weather
conditions. Calvin improves to 12-3 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in the
MIAA.
Calvin won the top four single flights in convincing fashion. Senior Brian
DeMaagd (Grandville/Calvin Christian) defeated Adrian freshman Jordan
Verbauwhede (Whitelaw, WI/Lincoln) 6-1, 6-1 at first singles. Seniors Preston
Phillips (Bexley, OH/Bexley HS) and Phil Reinken (Morton, IL/Morton HS) won at
second and third singles by scores of 6-3, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-0 respectively. The
two engineering majors also teamed up to defeated Verbauwede and Michael Mertz
(Farmington/North Farmington) 8-2 at first doubles.
Calvin junior Loukus Peterson (Brentwood, TN/Brentwood HS) defeated Cameron
Hamilton (Mason/Mason HS) 6-2, 6-0 at fourth singles. The win was Peterson’s
second of the day as him and DeMaagd defeated Hamilton and Alex Amos
(Delton/Gull Lake) 8-2 at second doubles.
Holland Christian alums senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian) and
junior John Strikwerda (Holland/Holland Christian) defeated Ryan Delacy
(Novi/Detroit Catholic Central) and Spencer Georgetti (Sylvania, OH/Northview)
8-6 at third doubles. Brower also won a 7-5, 6-2 match at fifth singles
defeating Amos.
The most contested match of the day was at the sixth singles flight.
Sophomore Tom Griffin (Elmhurst, IL/Timothy Christian) outlasted Troy Gargrave
(Sterling Heights/Sterling Heights HS) 6-2, 4-6, 10-5.
Calvin, ranked regionally for the first time since 2008, is currently ranked
17th in the central region. The Knights return to action Thurs., Apr. 18, when
it faces Davenport University for a non-conference match slated to start at
7:00 p.m. at the MVP Sportsplex.
