Men's Golf Fourth at Knight Invite - Softball Splits With Saint Mary's -

MEN'S GOLF

CALEDONIA, MI - The Calvin men’s golf team competed in a nine team, one round
tournament at Thornapple Pointe Golf Course. The Knights, who won the
program’s second MIAA conference championship in history in the fall,
finished in fourth place. Davenport won the invitational with a team score of
318. Calvin finished with a score of 331.
Junior Mark Allen (Oconomowoc, WI/Lake Country Lutheran) finished second
individually with a round of 78 - 39 on the front nine followed by the same
score on the final nine holes. Freshman Justin Crow (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
Christian) turned in a round of 81 (38-43) while juniors Jake Hoogstrate (Grand
Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and Ross Ryzenga (Holland/Holland Christian)
both shot rounds of 86.
Freshman Ben Elenbaas (Byron Center/South Christian) shot 45 on both nines,
and finished with a round of 90.
Calvin returns to action Fri., Apr. 19, when it hosts the second of three MIAA
Spring Tournaments at Watermark Country Club. The tournament is scheduled to
start at 1:00 p.m.

SOFTBALL
Calvin 8, Saint Mary's 2

Calvin split a doubleheader with visiting Saint Mary's Tuesday afternoon at
the Gainey Athletic Complex, winning the opener 8-2 before dropping the
nightcap 3-2. Calvin is now 12-10 on the year and 3-5 in the MIAA.
In game one, junior Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian HS) retired the
final 11 batters she faced while belting a two-run homer and a double to lead
the Knights to the victory. Avila went 3-for-4 at the plate while allowing just
two hits. Calvin had 13 hits in the victory. Freshman catcher Lydia Gildea
(Gobles/Gobles HS) also went 3-for-4 while driving in three runs. Sophomore
Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) and freshmen Megan
Rozeveld (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and Ashley Jakus (Muskegon/Muskegon
Reeths-Puffer HS) had two hits apiece. Sophomore Christie VanderMeer
(Grandville/Grandville HS) also scored three runs.
Calvin scored three runs in the first capped off by a two-run homer by Avila.
The Knights added two more runs in the second and three in the sixth to gain
the win.
Avila also started game two in the pitcher's circle and tossed shutout ball
through the first four innings. Avila also gave Calvin a 1-0 lead with a
leadoff home run in the second inning. In the top of the fifth, VanderMeer led
off with a double and later scored on a double by Brownlee.
Saint Mary's (13-11 overall, 3-1-0 MIAA) answered with three runs in the
bottom of the fifth however including one run that was unearned.
In the top of the seventh, Jakus reached base on a two-out single and then
moved to third on a double down the left field line by Brownlee but both
runners were stranded on a fly-out to centerfield.
Calvin outhit Saint Mary's 8-5 in game two but stranded eight runners. The
Knights also committed three errors. Brownlee had three of Calvin's eighth hits
while sophomore Catherine Hilbrands (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS)
went 2-for-3 with a double.
Avila took the game two loss to fall to 6-4 on the year.
Calvin is back in action on Thursday as it travels to Goshen for a
non-conference doubleheader slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
BASEBALL
Central Michigan 10, Calvin 0
MOUNT PLEASANT - Calvin dropped a 10-0 decision at Division I Central Michigan
University Tuesday afternoon. The Knights are now 10-16 on the year.
The host Chippewas exploded for nine runs in the third inning to put the game
away early.
Calvin had five hits in defeat. Freshman Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South
Christian HS) to raise his season batting average to .352. Freshmen Jalen Bouma
(Ann Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) and Michael Kamp (Homer Glen, IL/Chicago
Christian HS) and junior Kyle Spoelma (Kentwood/South Christian HS) all had
single hits as well.
Freshman Travis Kraai (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) took the loss
for Calvin to fall to 0-1 on the year. Sophomore Jeremy Kamp (Homer Glen,
IL/Chicago Christian HS), freshman Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake
HS), sophomore Ben Guilfoyle (Romeoville, IL/Plainfield East HS) and junior
Jack Jorgenson (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran HS) all saw time in relief.
Jorgenson pitched a scoreless eighth, striking out two batters. It marked his
first appearance for Calvin in a month after suffering an injury in March.
Calvin is back in action on Friday, traveling to Alma for a conference
doubleheader at 2 p.m.
