Baseball Drops Both Ends of Doubleheader With Adrian;
Calvin Spring Sports Athletes Receive MIAA Weekly Honors;

Calvin was unable to use home field advantage to its advantage Monday
afternoon as the Knights dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader with
visiting Adrian, losing game one 7-0 and game two 9-1. Adrian (17-9 overall,
11-5 MIAA) moves into a tie for first place with Hope with the victories while
Calvin (10-15 overall, 9-7 MIAA) is now tied for third place with Trine.
In the opener, Calvin was able to muster only three hits while Adrian erupted
for 12 hits including a pair of solo home runs. Adrian also had four doubles
in the game for a total of six extra-base hits. Sophomore Grant VanPutten
(Holland/Holland Christian HS), senior Ben Cok (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids
Christian HS) and freshman Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS)
accounted for Calvin's three hits with VanPutten belting a double - his eighth
of the season. Sophomore Nate Schepers (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took the
loss for Calvin to fall to 2-1 on the year. Schepers struck out three and
walked three in five innings of work. Sophomores Austin Juza (Stevensville/Lake
Michigan Catholic) and Tom Bouwkamp (Pella, IA/Pella Christian HS) also saw
time in relief.
In game two, Calvin rapped out eight hits but could never string enough hits
together. Adrian meanwhile picked up four runs in the third innings and never
looked back, adding single runs in the fourth and sixth and three more in the
seventh. Calvin's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh as sophomore Ben
Wohl (Canton/Plymouth HS) delivered an RBI single. Freshman Tyler Lambers
(Holland/Holland Christian HS) and senior Tyler Tos (Walnut Creek, CA/Berean
Christian HS) had two hits apiece for the Knights. Junior Cory Laster
(Ludington/Ludington HS) took the loss to fall to 1-4. Laster struck out five
batters in six innings of work. Junior Louis Hill Jr. (Romulus/Romulus HS) and
freshman Kyle Wasserberger (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) came on in relief later
in the game.
Calvin will now prepare for a single non-conference game at Division I Central
Michigan University Tuesday afternoon at 4:05 p.m. in Mount Pleasant.

SOFTBALL
ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named
Calvin third baseman Janelle Agren its Position Player of the Week and for
games played through April 13.
Agren, a junior from Cadillac (Cadillac HS), went for 4-6 with four runs
scored and five RBIs in leading Calvin to an MIAA sweep of Olivet. In the
opener, she belted two doubles and a single, driving four runs in a 17-4 win
over the Comets, then followed with a home run in the nightcap in Calvin’s 13-5
victory. Agren is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her
career.
Calvin is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Saint Mary's in a conference
doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. at Gainey Field.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
A pair of Calvin College track and field athletes have received weekly honors
from the MIAA.
Calvin’s Julie Busscher has been named the MIAA Women's Track Athlete of the
Week, while Calvin’s Josh Meckes has been chosem MIAA Men's Field Athlete of
the Week.
Busscher, a junior from Hudsonville (Unity Christian HS), won the 100-meter
dash in :12.84 and the 200-meter dash in :26.21 to help lead Calvin to a
first-place showing at the MIAA Jamboree at Olivet. She also was part of the
Knights’ winning 4x100-meter relay and their 4x400-meter relay team that placed
second. Busscher is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in
her career.
Meckes, a senior from Bay City (Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS), won the shot put
with a toss of 49 feet, 6-1/4 inches at the MIAA Jamboree. He also took second
in the discus with a throw of 149 feet, 4 inches. Meckes is being honored as
Athlete of the Week for the first time this season and fourth time in his
career.
ACADEMIC HONORS FOR CALVIN SPRING SPORTS ATHLETES
A pair of Calvin spring sports athletes have received lofty academic honors.
Calvin College juniors Nicole Michmerhuizen and John Strikwerda - both
graduates of Holland Christian High School - have been named Goldwater
Scholars.
The Goldwater Scholarship is the premiere undergraduate award of its type in
the field of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The program was
designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in
those areas.
Michmerhuizen is a standout on the Calvin women's cross country and women's
track and field teams. This past March, she was the national runner-up in the
women's 5,000 meters at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Strikwerda meanwhile is a key member of the Calvin men's tennis team that is
currently regionally-ranked and on top of the MIAA dual match standings.
