OLIVET – The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams took a step

May 2 and 3 at Hope College making up the remaining half.
In the MIAA Jamboree on Saturday, the Calvin men recorded a first place total
of 875.50 points using the “true team scoring” formula where up to 21 places

“It was just a lot of fun watching both of our teams compete today,” said
Calvin men’s and women’s track and field coach Bret Otte. “Both of our teams
competed very hard and pulled for one another. There were so many little things
that went on behind the scenes that led to season-best efforts that got us
extra points, even if it was seventh or eighth place. It was just a very
enjoyable day for Calvin track and field.”
Both Calvin teams will now prepare to compete at the Al Owens Classic next
Friday and Saturday at Grand Valley State.
MEN’S GOLF
WEST OLIVE – The Calvin men’s golf team vaulted into first place in the MIAA
spring standings on Saturday afternoon, firing a first place score of 304
strokes at the first of three 18-hole MIAA spring tournament rounds. Saturday’s
tournament round was hosted by Hope at the Wuskowhan Player’s Club. Calvin will
host the final two 18-hole rounds next weekend at the Watermark Country Club.
The first weekend round will be held on April 19 with the second round set for
April 20. Only the top four teams from the MIAA’s fall season standings are
competing in the spring tournament. In addition to Calvin and Hope, Adrian and
Trine are competing. The team that finishes with the top cumulative 54-hole
score at the conclusion of the three MIAA spring tournaments will receive the
MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.
In Saturday’s opening round, Calvin battled through cold nasty weather via the

one-under round of 70 while Kuiper came up with a round of 75 after recording a

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
Calvin 9, Trine 6
By Mark DeHaan
The Calvin College women's lacrosse team earned its first MIAA victory in
program history on Saturday afternoon. Hosting the Thunder of Trine College,
Calvin broke a 6-6 tie with 24:33 remaining in the game and added two insurance
goals en route to a 9-6 victory.
Senior Nicole Perragaux scored the first goal of the game just over two
minutes in. Freshman Caroyln Forbes then added a goal off a free position
attempt before Trine scored its first goal of the match.
The two teams then traded goals until junior Michelle Holwerda put the ball in
the back of the net with 1:53 remaining in the first half to give the Knights a
6-4 advantage, which they would take into halftime.
Out of the intermission, the Thunder scored two goals in the opening four
minutes, the second while up a player, to tie the game at 6-6.
A pair of beautiful assists from Holwerda to Perragaux and sophomore Lissa
Busscher then gave the Knights an 8-6 lead before Holwerda netted her second
goal of the game with 19:39 remaining to bring the score to 9-6.
In the remaining time, Calvin played stout defense and held a large portion of
the possession to keep Trine scoreless the rest of the way as the Knights
closed out their first MIAA conference victory in program history.
Holwerda tallied two goals and two assists while Perragaux and junior Mary
Hoogstra each netted two goals apiece. Senior Lauren Spoelstra earned the win
in net, making five saves.
As a team, Calvin outshot Trine 33-13, held a 28-16 advantage on ground balls
while forcing the Thunder into 24 turnovers.
Trine was led by Kassi Armstrong who scored two goals and added one assist.
“We managed the middle of the field well today. We were very conscious of ball
possession in transition, we adjusted some things with where the midfield and
attack are as we transitioned, which opened (Trine) up a lot, and we executed
on offense,” said head coach Blake Boehm. “We found a way to get ourselves in
scoring position and we put the ball in the back of the net. It's good stuff to
build off of in the next week.”
The Knights improve to 3-9 overall and 1-2 in the MIAA while Trine drops to
1-4 and 0-2 in the conference.
Calvin's next game is scheduled for April 19 when the Knights travel to Alma
for another conference match. The game against the Scots is scheduled to start
at 4 p.m.
