Calvin softball hosted the Comets of Olivet Friday afternoon for a conference
doubleheader. Calvin used two big innings of six runs and eight runs,
respectively, to defeat Olivet in game one, 17-4. In game two, aggressive base
running and 16 total stolen bases aided the Knights to a 13-5 victory.

In game one, the Comets scored the first run of game one in the top of the
first inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Calvin responded with a six run bottom of the first, highlighted by a 2-RBI
double by junior Janelle Agren, to take a 6-1 lead. Olivet chipped away at the
Calvin lead in the second and third innings, adding a run apiece to cut the
Knights advantage to 6-3.

In the bottom of the third, the Knights plated eight more runs to take the
14-3 lead. Sophomore Christie VanderMeer had a 2-RBI single in the third while
Agren again hit a 2-RBI double.

Three more runs by Calvin in the fourth and some strong pitching in relief by
sophomore Trista Brownlee gave the Knights a 17-3 lead heading into the fifth.

The Comets scored one run in the fifth but could not cut into the Calvin lead
any more and the Knights earned the 17-4 mercy-rule victory.

In game one, Calvin was led offensively Agren who was 3-for-3 with four RBI
and three runs scored. Junior Lina Avila was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and two runs
scored while VanderMeer was 2-for-3 with two RBI and three runs scored. Junior
Caitlin Callow earned the win in the circle for the Knights.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Calvin scored two runs in the top of
the second to open up the scoring. The Comets responded with two of their own
in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 2-2.
In the top of the third, the Knights scored four runs, with two coming on a
2-RBI single from Avila.
In the fourth inning, Calvin again plated four runs, thanks to aggressive
base-running as the Knights stole five bases in one half-inning. In the middle
of the fourth, Calvin held a 10-2 lead.

Olivet did not go away quietly, however, and the Comets responded with three
runs to cut the Knights advantage to 10-5.

Calvin then scored one in the sixth on a solo home run from freshman Ashley
Reimersma, and two in the seventh, one on a solo home run by Agren, to take a
13-5 lead. Brownlee then shut the Comets down on defense to close out the 13-5
victory.

In game two, sophomore Catherine Hilbrands was 2-for-4 with two runs scored
and one RBI while Brownlee was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, one RBI and five
stolen bases. Brownlee also earned the win in the circle, pitching four and
two-thirds innings, striking out three, allowing two hits and giving up only
one earned run.

“It was fun to get some people on base. Our players were aggressive on the
bases and made Olivet's mistakes hurt them,” said head coach Sharon DeKleine.
“With proper hitting, we bounced out of not scoring a lot of runs by scoring
a lot of runs today.”

The Knights now have a quick turnaround as they will play the Hornets of
Kalamazoo College tomorrow afternoon at Gainey Field. The twinbill was
initially scheduled to be played in Kalamazoo, but due to field conditions,
will be played at Gainey Field. The doubleheader is scheduled to start at 1
p.m.

BASEBALL
Adrian 8, Calvin 7 (9 innings)
Calvin 8, Adrian 3

ADRIAN – Calvin gained a split of a series-opening doubleheader at Adrian
Friday afternoon, losing the opener 8-7 in nine innings before coming back to
win game two 8-3.

In the opener, Calvin built a 4-1 lead but the host Bulldogs rallied for four
runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Calvin (10-13 overall, 9-5
MIAA) answered back with three runs in the top of the seventh with the key blow
a two-run RBI double by senior Mike Fuller (Sylvania, OH/Southview HS). Adrian
once again put the rally caps on in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a pair
of runs including the game-tying score with two outs to send the game into
extra innings.

Calvin was unable to mount a threat in either the eighth or the ninth. The
Bulldogs (15-9, 9-5 MIAA) then scored the winning run on a one-out single after
a batter had singled and moved to second on an error. Freshman Jalen Bouma (Ann
Arbor/Ann Arbor Huron HS) took the loss for the Knights to fall to 0-1 on the
season. Calvin had 10 hits in the loss led by sophomore Grant VanPutten
(Holland/Holland Christian HS) who went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
Junior Jeff Victor (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was the starting pitcher for
the Knights, going five innings, striking out three and walking one.

In game two, Calvin broke open a 4-2 game with a run in the fourth and three
in the fifth. VanPutten had another superb game, going 3-for-4 with three runs
batted in. Freshman Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) also went
2-for-4 while Bouma batted in three runs, driving in one on a sacrifice fly and
another on a run-scoring double.

Junior Grant VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) went the distance to pick
up his second win against two defeats. He struck out four and walked three.

The two teams were scheduled to play at Calvin on Saturday in a 2 p.m.
doubleheader. That twinbill has now been moved to Monday at Calvin with a 2
p.m. scheduled start.
