Baseball Drops Opening Game to Alma - Second Game Suspended;
Women's Lacross Defeated by Alma;
Men's Tennis Topped by Davenport
BASEBALL
ALMA - Calvin dropped the opening game of a doubleheader with Alma Friday afternoon at Klenk Park 6-5. The second game was then tied 2-2 after two-and-a-half innings before darkness suspended play. The resumption of game two has not yet been announced.
In the opener, Calvin (10-17 overall, 9-8 MIAA), held a 5-2 lead but Alma scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-5 lead and then held scoreless the rest of the way to hang on for the win.
Junior Jeff Victor (Holland Christian HS) took the loss for Calvin to fall to 2-3 on the year. Junior Jack Jorgenson (Milwaukee Lutheran HS) also tossed one inning of relief.
Senior Ben Cok (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a double and three walks while junior Kyle Spoelma (South Christian HS) had a double and drove in a run.
In game two, Calvin scored both of its runs in the second inning as freshman Jordan VanderWall (South Christian HS) drove in one run on a sacrifice fly and freshman Michael Kamp (Chicago Christian HS) drove in another run on a single. Grant VanderWall (South Christian HS) went the first two innings before play was haulted in the bottom of the third.
Calvin is scheduled to host Alma in a doubleheader on Monday at 2 p.m.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
ALMA - Calvin dropped to 3-11 overall and to 1-4 in the MIAA with a 14-4 loss at Alma Friday afternoon at Bahlke Stadium.
Alma led 7-1 at halftime and then scored seven more times in the second half to clinch the win.
Freshman Sierra Slaughter (Hyde Park, NY) had a pair of goals to lead the Calvin offensive attach while junior Michelle Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Lissa Busscher (Holland Christian HS) also scored for the Knights. Senior Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ) had 10 saves in goal for Calvin.
The Knights will host Pacific on Saturday at Calvin at 11 a.m.
MEN'S TENNIS
Calvin dropped a 6-2 decision late Thursday night to Davenport University in a non-conference match played at the MVP Sportsplex.
Senior Brian DeMaagd (Calvin Christian HS) and junior Loukas Peterson (Brentwood, TN) teamed up for Calvin's lone doubles point, winning 9-8 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, senior Jarrod Brower (Holland/Holland Christian HS) was a three-set winner ast No. 3 singles.
Calvin (12-3) will journey to Albion on Saturday for a key MIAA match slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
