The Calvin softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader with visiting Adrian Thursday at the Gainey Athletic Complex, losing the opener 8-4 and the nightcap 5-2.

Defensive miscues cost Calvin in game one as the Knights committed six errors that led to five unearned runs. Calvin outhit Adrian (6-10, 2-0 MIAA) 7-6 but could not come up with enough timely hits to keep pace with the Bulldogs on the scoreboard. Calvin took an early 2-0 lead on a two-run RBI double to right by junior Lina Avila but Adrian countered with a run in the third and four in the fifth to build a 5-2 lead. Calvin came back with two runs in the bottom half of the fifth but Adrian answered with three in the top of the sixth to regain command.

Sophomore Trista Brownlee had two of Calvin's seven hits. Sophomore Christie VanderMeer also had a triple and scored a run. Avila took the loss for Calvin in the circle, allowing six hits in seven innings of work.

In game two, Adrian jumped out to an early lead again, scoring four in the second. The Bulldogs added an insurance run in the fourth. Calvin (8-6 overall, 0-2 MIAA) scored single runs in the third and seventh. Both teams had six hits and committed two errors. Adrian reaped the benefits of five walks by the Calvin pitching staff however.

Junior Caitlin Callow took the loss for Calvin. VanderMeer went 2-for-4 for the Knights with an RBI. Freshman Lydia Gildea had a triple and and RBI while freshman Ashley Riemersma had a double.
