Calvin softball hosted the Scots of Alma on Friday afternoon for a pair of
games at Gainey Field. The Scots came into the doubleheader undefeated in
conference play while the Knights had yet to tally a win against an MIAA
opponent. After the pair of games, the teams left the same way they had come
in, with Alma remaining perfect in the MIAA and Calvin still seeking its first
conference victory.
The Scots got off to a quick start in game one as they scored two runs in the
top of the first inning. After two batters reached base, Abi Clark hit a
two-RBI double with two outs to give Alma the 2-0 lead.
The Scots extended their lead in the second on a single from Brooke Hein which
plated a run to bring the score to 3-0 in Alma's favor.
After another scoreless inning for the Calvin offense, a number of errors in
the third saw the game slip out of reach for the Knights.
An error on the Calvin defense loaded the bases with one out. The Scots then
scored a run on a fielder's choice to bring the score to 4-0.
Two more errors on the Knights allowed two more runs for Alma. With the bases
still loaded, a walk from Calvin junior pitcher Lina Avila (Lakewood, CA/Valley
Christian HS) brought in another run.
After a Knights pitching change, Alma scored two more runs on a two-RBI single
from Kayla Smart before Calvin got the final two outs. The Scots led 9-0 at
the end of the six-run third. All six runs were unearned.
Alma pitcher Louise Rezmer, coming off a no-hitter on Wednesday against
Albion, had no trouble making her way through the line-up as she again kept
Calvin scoreless in the third and fourth.
In the top of the fifth, Alma added one more run to bring the score to 10-0.
Rezmer continued her dominant pitching and shut out the Knights in the bottom
of the fifth to seal the 10-0 mercy rule victory for the Scots.
Avila recorded the lone hit for the Knights. She also took the loss in the
circle, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up nine runs, just three of them
earned.
For Alma, Smart was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored while Hein was
2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI.
In the second game, Calvin got off to a fast start as it put three runners on
base with just one out in the top of the first. Unfortunately, a groundout to
the pitcher and a groundout to the shortstop ended the inning without the
Knights scoring a run.
The Scots were also held scoreless in the first inning, and Calvin again
threatened in the second. With runners at first and second, a groundout to the
shortstop ended the inning as the Knights left two more runners on base.
The Scots scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second on an
RBI double from Kayla Merice.
After a scoreless top of the third for Calvin with two more runners left on
base, the Scots scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take the 4-0
lead.
The Knights scored their first run of the doubleheader in the top of the
fourth to cut the Scots lead to 4-1.
In the fourth inning, Alma broke the game open with an RBI single from Ashley
Schneider and a grand slam from Lea Lusk to give the Scots the 9-1 lead.
Entering the game to pitch in relief for Alma was Rezmer. In the top of the
fifth, Rezmer saw three batters and put three down to end the game in a 9-1
mercy rule victory for the Scots.
Sophomore Trista Brownlee (Saginaw/Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) and freshman
Lydia Gildea (Gobles/Gobles HS) were both 2-for-3. Freshman Alyssa Bryan
(Custer/Mason County Eastern HS) scored the lone run for the Knights.
For Alma, Lusk was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBI. Schneider was
2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
“Game number one we had that one inning where they just busted loose for a few
runs and they got too many, we can't be giving runs away like that. Game two we
left players in scoring position. If we get a few of those in, that changes the
whole game around,” said head coach Sharon DeKleine. “The key is the whole game
has to be put together.”
The Knights drop to 8-8 overall and 0-4 in the MIAA while Alma is now 15-6 and
6-0 in conference play.
Calvin travels to Wheaton tomorrow for non-conference games against host
Wheaton and Robert Morris. The Knights resume MIAA-play next week Wednesday
with a home doubleheader against Olivet.
