Men's Tennis Makes History With First-Ever Win Over Kalamazoo;
Track and Field Teams Remain Nationally-Ranked

GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin College men's tennis team produced a piece of history on Wednesday afternoon inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center, defeating Kalamazoo College 6-3 in an MIAA dual match. The victory is the first in Calvin men's tennis history over the Hornets who have won at least a share of every MIAA championship since 1936. Calvin's victory over Kalamazoo ends K's 55-meet win streak against MIAA foes, dating back to '03. In addition, it is just the third loss in 460 MIAA dual meets for the Hornets dating back to 1936.
Calvin took control of the match by winning two of the three doubles points and then took four of the six singles points to clinch the victory. Seniors Brian DeMaagd Preston Phillips, and Jarrod Brower all delivered wins in singles play as did sophomore Tom Griffin.
Phillips and Reinken were also 8-4 winners at No. 1 doubles while DeMaagd and junior Loukas Peterson were 8-4 winners at No. 2 doubles.
"Our seniors really wanted this one badly," said Calvin men's tennis coach John Ross. "They've been talking about it for some time and the seniors in particular really stepped up and played huge. It's an exciting win and an historic win. But it is also just one win. We've got a tough match against Alma on Saturday so we'll have to enjoy this tonight but then get ready for Saturday."
DeMaagd was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 1 singles while Phillips claimed a 6-0, triumph at No. 2 singles. Brower won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5 singles to provide the clinching fifth point while Griffin won at No. 6 singles after his opponent retired in the second set with Griffin up a set and the second set tied at five.
Calvin (7-2 overall, 1-0 MIAA) has now won four straight matches beginning with a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over Spring Arbor University on March 28 after Calvin trailed 4-0 in the match.
"I think the win over Spring Arbor really got us going," said Ross. "We're playing with confidence and the win over Spring Arbor was a big part of it."
Saturday's match against Alma is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams continue to hold spots in the latest set of Division III National Rankings conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.

Both Calvin teams are at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing this weekend on the campus of Michigan State University.
