Baseball Splits With Trine;
Ben deWall Malefyt Named MIAA Field Athlete of the Week;
Women's Tennis Drops 6-3 Decision at Alma

Calvin split a doubleheader with Trine Tuesday afternoon to remain at .500 in
league play. The Knights are now 4-4 in conference action. Calvin took
Tuesday's opener 3-2 and then dropped game two 2-0.
In game one, junior Jeff Victor cruised through five innings of shutout ball
before the Thunder rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie
the score 2-2. Calvin took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by sophomore Garrett
Harder (Fenwich/West Michigan Lutheran HS) in the first and then built a 2-0
advantage on an RBI double by Harder in the fifth.
Calvin (5-12 overall) took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth as freshman
Jordan VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) singled and later scored on a
Trine error. Victor then tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up his second victory
of the year. VanderWall and sophomore Grant VanPutten (Holland/Holland
Christian HS) had two hits apiece to lead Calvin's seven-hit attack.
In game two, Calvin was limited to five hits by the Trine pitching staff while
the Thunder scored a single run in the first and a single run in the fifth.
Calvin rallied in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with one out but
the Knights were retired with back-to-back pop-outs.
Junior Grant VanderWall (Wyoming/South Christian HS) took the loss, striking
out five and walking two in six innings of work. Calvin had no player with
more than one hit in the game. VanderWall had three stolen bases on the
afternoon to build his season total to 14 and his career total to 35. VanPutten
is now in third place on the Calvin career list for stolen bases and is within
six thefts of becoming Calvin's career leader.
The Knights are back in action on Friday, traveling to Kalamazoo for a 2 p.m.
doubleheader. The twinbill will be played at Homer Stryker Field. Directions to

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Calvin College junior Ben deWall Malefyt has been named the MIAA Field Athlete
of the Week in men’s track and field. deWall Malefyet, a junior from Midland
Park, N.J. (Eastern Christian HS), tossed a career-best 160 feet, 3 inches in
the discus to finish third at the Grand Rapids Open meet.
He is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.
Calvin is back in action this weekend at the Spartan Invitational at Michigan
State University.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Alma 6, Calvin 3
LANSING - The Calvin women's tennis team dropped a 6-3 conference match to
Alma on Tuesday at the Michigan Athletic Club in Lansing.
The Knights are now 2-11 overall and 0-3 in the MIAA.
Alma swept three tight doubles matches to gain a 3-0 lead. In singles play,
sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) picked up a tough
three-set win at No. 1 singles while sophomore Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity
Christian HS) was also a winner in three sets at No. 2 singles. Calvin's other
singles winner was senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian
HS) at No. 5 singles.
Calvin is back in action on April 10 when it hosts Kalamazoo at 4 p.m.
