By Mark DeHaan

The first meeting of the Rivalry in men's varsity lacrosse took place
Wednesday evening at Davenport's Turf Field. Hope opened up the game with six
unanswered goals before the Knights first scored. The Flying Dutchmen continued
to pull away on their way to an 18-5 victory.

Hope struck first as senior captain Josh Kamstra scored less than a minute
into the contest. The Flying Dutchmen continued to pull away in the opening
minutes as they opened their lead to 6-0 on a goal from Peter Stuckey with 6:32
remaining in the first quarter.

Freshman D.J. VanderBaan scored the first goal of the game for the Knights
with 5:21 remaining in the first quarter. VanderBaan added a second goal with
2:22 remaining to cut Hope's lead to 6-2.
The Flying Dutch put two more goals in before the end of the quarter to take
an 8-2 lead.

Hope scored three goals out of the intermission before Tim Marco answered for
Calvin to bring the score to 11-3.

The teams then traded goals the remainder of the half, Calvin's VanderBaan
adding two more to his game total as the teams headed into halftime with Hope
leading 13-5.

The Flying Dutch held a 24-9 shots advantage at halftime while winning
12-of-20 face-offs.

Hope's Nicolas Raycraft opened the scoring in the second half with a goal with
12:15 remaining in the third quarter. Osterink added another Flying Dutch goal
with 6:36 remaining to go up 15-5. The teams headed into the fourth quarter
with that 15-5 score.

Hope scored two goals out of the intermission before play was halted by the
stadium lights turning off with 8:46 remaining in the game.

In the final 8:46, the Flying Dutch added one final goal and the Knights could
not respond as the game ended in an 18-5 Hope victory.

VanderBaan scored four goals for Calvin. Senior goalie Drew Sroczynski made 12
saves.
Hope was led by Kamstra, who scored 4 goals. Niko Pagkanlungan added 3 goals
and 4 assists while Stuckey chipped in 3 goals and 3 assists and Raycraft 3
goals.

The Flying Dutchmen outshot Calvin 48-20 while holding a 25-20 advantage in
ground balls and winning 17-of-27 face-offs.

“It was a good opportunity to get out here for the first time we play (Hope)
this season. Definitely not the result that we'd like to see here but I thought
we played tough,” said head coach Joel Kamstra.

“Offensively, we played really well and got some goals from guys who don't
typically score goals. Defensively, we started to change some things that
weren't working for us and we're going to go back to practice and play some
games on spring break and see if we can't correct it and get some better
results in the future.”

Calvin now looks forward to next week Wednesday when it will travel to
Augustana to face the Vikings with face-off scheduled 7 p.m. central time.
