Calvin Basketball Players Receive D3hoops.com All-Region Honors;
Verkaik D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Player of the Year - Vande Streek

MEN'S BASKETBALL
 
Two members of the Calvin men's basketball team have received D3hoops.com
Great Lakes All-Region honors while head coach Kevin Vande Streek has been
named the D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region men's basketball coach of the year.
 
Senior Tom Snikkers has been named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region
first team while senior Bryan Powell has been named to the third team.
 
A native of Jenison and a graduate of Unity Christian High School, Snikkers is
receiving D3hoops.com All-Region honors for the second time in his career as he
was a third team selection in 2011. He is averaging 13.5 points and 6.1
rebounds a game while compiling 79 assists and 33 steals. Last month he was
named to the All-MIAA first team for the third straight year. He is currently
eighth on the Calvin career scoring list with 1,453 points.
 
Powell is receiving D3hoops.com All-Region honors for the first time. A native
of Wyoming and a graduate of Wyoming Park High School, Powell is averaging 11.6
points and 2.2 assists per game. He is connecting on 41.6 percent of his
three-point field goals with a team-leading 57 three-pointers. He is also
shooting 81.8 percent from the free throw line. Last month he was also named to
the All-MIAA first team.
 
Now in his 17th year at the helm of the Calvin men's basketball program, Vande
Streek has led Calvin to a 26-3 record heading into a Sweet 16 NCAA III
Tournament game at St. Thomas this weekend. Earlier this year, he led Calvin
to its first MIAA regular season title since 2006 and its first MIAA Tournament
crown since 2007. Calvin has also reached the 20-win plateau for the sixth time
under his watch and has notched the most wins since the 2004-05 season when it
recorded a 27-7 record. Calvin is making its third strip to the Sweet 16 round
of the NCAA III Tournament under his guidance. At Calvin, he has posted a
record of 334-139. Overall as a head coach, he is 426-219.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
 
For the third straight year, Calvin College senior Carissa Verkaik has been
named the D3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Player of the Year.
 
A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, she has
also been named to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region first team for the
fourth straight year.
 
She was recently named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player for the fourth straight
year. She averaged 20.0 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks a game.
She completed her career as Calvin’s all-time leader in points (2,236),
rebounds (1,071) and blocked shots (440). She is now currently ranked third on
the all-time NCAA III women’s basketball list in blocked shots and 14th in
points.
 
She helped Calvin gain a share of the MIAA regular season title this year as
the Knights finished 15-1 in league play. Calvin also reached the NCAA III
Tournament for the fourth straight year, finishing 23-4 overall.
