WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 10, Hope 9
By Mitch Blankespoor
CALEDONIA, Mich. - After narrowly missing out on its first victory in a
quadruple overtime 11-10 loss to the College of Mount Saint Joseph last Sat.,
the Calvin women’s lacrosse team was not to be denied in a non-conference
matchup with Hope on Thurs. evening. The Knights held off a late run from the
Flying Dutch, defeating their rival 10-9 to earn the program’s first win as a
varsity sport.
“It feels great to get our first victory,” said Calvin head coach Blake Boehm
after the game. “Anytime you play Hope, the stakes are high.”
Calvin senior Katie Pranger (Denver, CO/Denver Christian) led Calvin with four
goals - including scoring the game’s first goal 1:16 into the game.
“That’s what we expect out of Katie [Pranger],” Boehm said. “She is a senior
leader on this team.”
Calvin rode the wave of momentum created by Pranger’s early goal, and got
another a minute later. Senior Nicole Perregaux (Upton,MA/Nipmuc Regional)
split two Hope defenders, and buried a shot past Hope goalie Jessica Donnell
(McLean, VA/McLean) to extend Calvin’s lead to 2-0. The Knights held their
two-goal advantage, and led 5-3 at halftime.
Hope held slight advantages in shots (15-14), draw controls (6-3) and clears
(11-10) in the first half. Calvin earned 11 ground balls compared to Hope’s
nine. Both teams committed 20 fouls.
Calvin’s biggest lead of the game came with 13:45 remaining in regulation.
Pranger scored her fourth goal on a beautiful pass from junior Mary Hoogstra
(Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) after Hoogstra won the draw control.
After a timeout from Hope head coach Tracy Benjamin, the Flying Dutch answered
with three goals in eight minutes - two of them coming from senior captain
Maddie Ferguson (Seattle, WA/Seattle Prep).
Calvin was able to hold the ball in Hope’s offensive zone for much of the
final three minutes. A final attack from Hope junior middy Katie Sabourin
(Flint/Flint Powers Catholic) did not yield a shot.
Ferguson led all scorers with five goals in defeat. Perregaux added two goals
while four different Knights netted one.
“Our transitions were much better today,” Boehm said of Calvin converting 14
of 22 clear attempts. The Knights scooped up 18 ground balls and won 10 draw
controls. Calvin senior goalie Lauren Spoelstra (Oakland, NJ/Eastern
Christian) was credited with 10 saves.
The win against Hope is part of the non-conference portion of Calvin’s
schedule which will continue Sat., March 16, when the Knights travel to
Maryland to face Notre Dame of Maryland. The game is slated to start at 7:30
p.m. EST.
